The Bench Pull up some pine, and let's talk it out. Anything goes here, as long as it "jives" with the tone of this board, which is family oriented, and is Buick related.

I've seen those... what is the difference between what the electoric controller/programers and what the shift kits do? I know what the shift kits do... but what are the programmers really doing.

Has anyone tried the corvette servo/aftermarket servos?

The programmers canl change shift points and feel. The computer does all the work with timing (waits longer) and added pressures. You also can increase engine performance and make adjustments for larger tires. If you are still under warranty you can temporarily reverse the mods for a trip to the dealer.

So pump pressure is electronically actuated?

No issue with warranties... that is long gone. this is a 98. i've notice there is a difference in the pre and post '97 4l60e trannies. any idea what that is about?

Sorry, full of questions. not much information out there that is'nt vage or trying to sell stuff or a rebuilt tranny.

Is this sun shell a problem if i don't abuse it with slamming the tranny between gears while moving? that's what i have heard was causing that but i havn't been able to varify it.

I am trying to get away with out having to pull the tranny. I've done a 400 before and that has was sucessful, but i really don't want to put much money into it, as it is not my perminant tow rig. i just want it to live, until i am ready to purchase a crew cab dually.

I suppose i should also add that there is nothing currently wrong with the tranny. the suburban has the factory tow package w/ external tranny cooler in line with the tranny to water cooler. truck will be pulling a trailer to the top of it's capacity.

I believe the changes occurred when the Vortec engines made their debute. When the trans went out in our '94 Burb at about 235k I went down to the recycler(wrecking yard) and bought another that seemed to have pretty pink fluid(The odometer had about 105k). I replaces the fluid and filter(Cleanest time I ever did as it was on the ground instead of under the vehicle), and replaced the original. Still going at 275k. I figured if my original went 235k I have at least 80k maybe more that I can get out of the replacement, and the $350 I spent on it was a third of the cheapest rebuild I priced. This included the TorqueConvertor. I did learn not to leave the convertor in the trans while in transit as this wrecks the front trans seal, Ask me how I found out.

Bottom line is get the replacement from a same year/model vehicle so it is a very close replacement.

As far as a rebuild they are pricey for a good one.
Century Trans(Mike Kurtz)http://www.centurytransmission.com/ in Richmond Texas
and
Phoenix Trans(Greg Ducato)http://www.phoenixtrans.com/ in Weatherford, Texas
are two that I have experience with and would highly reccomend.

Why doesn't "Buick" rhyme with "quick"?

If I remember correctly, post '96 or so has a bolt on bell housing. All the GM trans with an "E", pump pressure, shift points, and shift feel are electronically controlled by the computer with "Pulse Width Modulated" solenoids. These solonoids regulate fluid flow or pressure and are not just on/off solenoids.

Check out this website. It's who I used for my shift kit in my Caprice. I wish I would of had known about them when I put my shift kit in my truck. They'll tailor the shift kit to your needs. If you call, you want to talk to Dana. Sometimes it takes a while to get him, but keep leaving messages and calling back.

I think the post 96 did have the bolt on bellhousing and 5 pinion planetaries instead of 4 pinion, different pump , and servo . After my son blowing 5 trans in 95 Z/28 I had to learn about them .
