Default Oil Pump

Im currently building a 455 motor and I read somwhere that it is a bad idea to put a high volume oil pump on. Is this true or is this just true for blocks that don't have the oil mods, which should be done? Please let me know. I'd like some explanation as why it is a good or bad idea. Thanks.

Brian,
This has been discussed many times on this BB. The HV/HP pump uses longer gears. It puts a bigger load on the cam gear and distributor gear. It puts alot of pressure on the front cam bearing timing chain and gears. It is completely unnecessary unless it is being used in a race engine with large clearances. The stock pump with proper internal clearances is capable of supplying all the oil needs of a properly built BBB. The end clearance of the pump must be checked and adjusted. Simply buying new gears and rebuilding the pump isn't enough. For more info, just put "oil pump" into the search feature of this board.

basiclly a cheap fix for old worn out engines,
not needed if rebuild is done right/oil mods to block

So basically the clearances must be correct and it should be a freshened motor to run a high volume fuel pump?

No, NEVER use a HV/HP pump unless you have a race motor with big clearances.
