The Bench Pull up some pine, and let's talk it out. Anything goes here, as long as it "jives" with the tone of this board, which is family oriented, and is Buick related.

Default Yes, GM had economy cars 40 yrs ago

Imagine one of these with fuel injection and a 5 spd manual. Probably 45-50 mpg with that little 1.1 engine.

My brother owns one, it's a 1972 Kadett with a 1.4 litre fuel injection engine from a later Opel Corsa, 5 speed manual transmission and it runs on LPG.

Road tax exempt and with classic car insurance (around 90 US$ dollar a year), you can't run a cheaper car here in the Netherlands.....

My father used to buy VW Bugs. He always said they got 35 mpg: uphill, downhill, city, highway; it didn't matter.

Many years ago we had a customer who was a Cambodian immigrant. He had a Mitsubishi-built Dodge Colt with a four-speed manual transmission and a two-speed transfer case (stock). The transfer case lever was marked "power" and "economy". In the "economy" (Overdrive) range, the little wagon would do better then 50 mpg highway. This was with a carburetor in the 1970's! Can you imagine what it would do with a computer and EFI? It was fun to drive too. If you drove it right, it had eight speeds forward and two reverse. Hybrids do not impress me...

I'd like to see that Colt go 0-60 in 9 seconds like a Prius.

I remember the Turbo Colt had the same transfer case. And there was a 3-speed Rambler from the early 1960s that had something similar:

On a similar note, my friend's grandma in Cooperstown is the original owner of a '59 Vauxhall with under 20,000 miles. Just like Buick's Opels, these were sold by Pontiac dealerships.
