That car couldn't have been worth less than $4500 unless it was stolen. It doesn't make sense to me that it belonged in the program. Even if it was stolen the parts were worth more.

Maybe someone else can help explain this to me.

I've had a several of the Corvettes over the years. 1965, 1966, 1971, 1980, 1995 ZR1. Small blocks, big blocks, convertibles, etc. All great cars in their own rights. None of them were ever worth less than $4500, even back in the 1980s.

Does anyone know what year that is? A Good condition 89 Vette (they don't go back any older and the C4 goes to 85) comes up around $4175 on Kelley Blue Book (trade in). That's assuming that a 20 yr old vehicle would have around 125,000 miles. So depending on year, it may not be worth $4500 even retail.

Didn't really seem to meet the criteria.

• 18 MPG or Less - The vehicle’s combined fuel economy rating must be 18 miles per gallon (MPG) or less.
• Model Year 1984 or Newer - Vehicles older than 1984 are not eligible.
• Continuously Insured and Registered- You must prove that the vehicle has been registered and covered under a liability policy for the past twelve months.
• Driveable - The vehicle must be roadworthy. If it’s not running, it’s not eligible.

So instead of really getting rid of clunkers ( un drivable) These nimrods trash a seemingly working motor and cause about 5 years worth of smog in 5 minutes.

Sad fact is, that car meets the criteria on a base level.

Any idiot who would trade a car that is worth more than $4,500 in for a $4,500 credit should be horse whipped.

Any dealer who would take a trade worth more than $4,500 in and follow through on the clunkers program instead of selling the car for what it is worth should also be horsewhipped.

Th Cash for Clunkers program has a place in our economy. GM announced last week that it is calling back employees to ramp up production ( http://media.gm.com/servlet/GatewayS...74&docid=56341 ) due to the success of the program in reducing inventories.

I am going to be soooo happy when this program ends so that we will have to find something else to gripe about!

This is nothing more than our own government destroying capitalism. They are attacking the used car market. It is much like tearing down a whole neighborhood of houses because they have old HVAC systems and energy inefficient windows, and giving a clunker credit to build new houses. It is counter-productive.

The Flint thing has NOTHING to do with poor HVAC and energy inefficient windows. And it is NOT a Federal program - it was a Flint program to eliminate the abandoned and reposessed homes in a town built for 300,000 that only has 100,000 residents. So they make parks for kids to play in rather than continue to watch these neighborhoods fall into deeper disrepair that only serve to support the drug trade.

Sorry to be in such a pissy mood today (read - I am upset with my wife) - but if we are going to make analogies here, they should fit the situation and be supportable.
