Just make sure your turn signal cancel cam has the J groove in it for the contact pin collar. Some turn signal cancel cams do not have the J groove.

As for using a hacksaw for the plunger.........why do you need to do that?

George, the New GM horn Contacts come with a long plunger, and they give you different length recomendations for different vehicles. So people cut them. Honestly, I never did cut one for a BUICK, but did have to on an Oldsmobile.

Just for everyone's info...the 73-87 GM trucks use the same horn contact pin/plunger, retaining collar and spring.

Thanks for the info on the plunger lengths in the repro kits.

What is the correct lenght to cut the plunger to?

Cut mine to 3/4 inch per instructions in kit for "later than 1968 models". Works good.

Did you end up at 3/4" also?

Yes, I was off because i used my hack saw and held it with plyers. If your slightly under that should work too. I pulled the one off my '71 just to verify. It was a little under 3/4. Let me tell you how fast a side post battery unhooks at 12am! lol

I need to make a correction here. The plunger length was not causing the honking. It was the Horn contact I purchased from a board member. As you can see the hole is too small. So it was grounding out. Should be at least 1 1/8. I wanted to pass this along. A HUGE thanks to 1972 Stage 1 for diagnosing my problem right over the phone !!

If anyone has a friend with a camero or some such, let me know..And this one can find it's rightful home.

I'm going to revive this thread as I had a question while starting to remove the deluxe steering wheel from my '72 Skylark to put in a sport steering wheel. When I removed the horn bar section I noticed with the horn contacts that the wires feed into seem to be riveted through the plastic center. Is there a way to remove these or should I just clip the wires and get new contacts?

The standard steering wheels twist-lock into the horn contact.....rotate counter-clockwise and gently pull....should easily unplug from the horn contact.

Thanks for all the tips here. I finished installing my sport steering wheel and the horn works with no problem after installing a new horn contact kit (did not need to cut down my pin). I thought that I had gotten the wheel hub close enough to the steering column but after seeing some other sport wheels in Buicks I think mine may be out too much. The thing is I could not get the hub to go down anymore to be closer to the column. Take a look at the pics and let me know what you all think.

It looks to be out a lil too much.

You should also remove the lock plate cover and paint it the same color as the column and reinstall it.

    >>Any idea how to get the hub closer - lump hammer? Tightening down the center nut did not help much. That is a good idea about painting the lock plate cover - will definitely do that.:TU:
