Where do I start? I peered into the valve covers and see no oil running on the push rods, nothing moving around, nothing on oil pressure gauge. Yes it has it's 5 quarts of high ZINC break in oil. I did not put any oil into the filter. I guess next would be to fill to repack the oil pump. Is oil just going to com pouring out of there when I take that off??? Can I use the same gasket?
If you don't have oil in the filter now, the prime never took, plate repack w vaseoline, reuse the gasket, put some oil in the filter and try again. I hope it works the second time around. You will not like what you might have to do if you can't get oil pressure on prelube. Allen
right, when i prelubed mine when i woke it from sitting 30 years i left the oil filter off drained and filled the oil then i took the filter off and ran it till about 1/2 a quart came out then restarted i didnt even repack it. primed right up. do you have the stock oil pan still?
Ok....Yah..I did when getting the TC and Flex plate lined up...lft the damn distributor in so it probably dumped the packing out...Humph...on my way ti the pharmacy to buy a jar of vaseline..."No...seriously lady; it's for my car..."p
Ok boys..Whatz the nasty alternative? I repacked the the pump x2. Let me guess, My pick oil up screen is probably packed with vaseline and I have to drop my freakin oil pan and clean it all up..!!!!! Time to walk away. Do this next weekend. :af: :af: :af:
why would your pickup tube be packed with vaseline? try adding a quart or 2. how long are you letting the drill run before you give up?i was priming a 440 one time and it took almost 20 seconds to build any pressure.
Relaxed. But still no oil pressure... Maybe my engine builder forgot to install the oil pick up tube. uzzled:
I'll throw out something simple and easy to check. Is the oil pressure relief valve and spring in place and installed properly? Devon
Devon, I checked for the spring. It's there. I seem to remember my builder saying something about removing the pressure relief valve...wonder if that's a sometimes preformed mod on Chebby and Fard engines but would create current situation on a Buick engine? What do I look for re relief valve? Oh, i think the oil from the filter is being moved... (I filled it up...when I took it off 2nd time it was near empty.)
He's talking about blocking the oil filter bypass valve which isn't related. Besides the oil pressure relief valve spring you saw, you need to make sure the small cylindrical relief valve itself is sitting in the bottom of the bore, and that it seats positively and moves freely in its bore. The valve is shown in the far upper left of this picture above the spring: Devon
Do you have other photos of the engine during assembly that show that the oil pickup is in place as well as the front lifter galley plugs? Devon
