Hey guys my car has been making this noise for a while now and I've only been driving it to move it for street cleaning. I THINK it's the brake shoes and I will be going to pick up a new set tomorrow. The thing that makes me think otherwise is that it happens when you're not pressing the brakes. When it screeches (VERY LOUDLY) the car also pulls to one side because of the contact. The faster you go the less screeching but you can hear rubbing as the wheel is rotating. I want to know if you guys have ever had this problem and what should I prepare myself for if you did.....
If the noise is coming from the front DISC brakes, there is a wear sensor on one of the pads that contacts the rotor and makes noise telling you it is time to change the pads. Why don't you remove the wheels and have a look?
Sound like a spring broke that pulls the pads off the drums and is rubbing the drum. I'm sure you will find something broke when you get it apart.
Sounds about right. I can't wait to get some money and change these ****ty brakes out for some discs.
Before you go through all of that check the back seat. Is there your girlfriend/wife/mother-in-law back there???? o No:
I noticed a big improvement in stopping when I switched my front drums out for discs. No more brake fade to worry about either.
And I live in NYC! Stop and go all day! Besides that though discs are a lot easier to work on and lets problematic. You can preach all day about drums but disc brakes are just much better all around.
Think my car will make it 44 miles in this condition? I have to go get an estimate and I don't have a jack to jack up my car.....
What's the worst that can happen? Brakes fail and you crash and die. I would try to borrow a jack or something before putting 50 miles on. What if they tell you you need brakes, but they can't do it until tomorrow, then add on another 90 miles round trip. You kinda need brakes dude, make sure they are usable before going too far.
HAHAHA I guess that's the worst that could happen but someone forcing me to have sex with queen elizabeth wouldn't be too far behind. I'm trying to get a jack tomorrow. If a spring is indeed broken do you think they'll have them in stock at a local autozone, advanced etc..?
and make sure you turn the adjuster down tro were the wheel has a lil bit of resistance when you try to spin it(the lil toothed wheel on the bottom turn down to tighten it)
I've come to the conclusion that I'm not the only fella out there wanting to convert a Buick to discs.
So after pulling off the brake I didn't see jack wrong. So I'm pretty sure it's all in the transmission. I was driving today and while holding the accelerator steady you all of a sudden the car feels as if the the transmission is hitting the brakes lightly. Like it's skipping. Also I still here that rotating noise of something not right. While the transmission does have a slow leak (what old car doesn't) the fluid level is good. Any suggestions of what it might be IN the transmission?
