Does any body know the correct direction for the 455 factory conn rod.Had the machine shop replace the pistons and I CANNOT remember the correct direction. The rod bearing sits right on the edge of one side of the conn rod /or cap and has a 1/8 gap on the other side.Which one faces the outside of the journal and which one faces the inside to each other(the other conn rod on that journal). Thanks
The dimples face each other. The dimples on 1,3,5,7 face toward the back. 2,4,6,8 toward the front. If you look on the caps there is a dimple on those as well. The pistons only go one way as well. They will have a notch or an arrow indicating front. If the pistons were installed correctly 4 pistons will have the dimples opposite of the notch or arrow for 1,3,5,7 and the ones the same side for 2,4,6,8. Here's a pic of the dimples on the rod. Ray
As a general rule of thumb, look at the chamfer on edge of the rods. Typically, only one side has a bigger chamfer on it - to clear the radius on the crank journal outer edge.
I hope the machine shop was aware of the orientation of these rods (dimples facing each other) prior to replacing the pistons. Like Ray said in the above post; it's not just the dimples that matter; it's also the way the piston is installed on these rods.
