It may be low on coolant or possibly a stuck heater control valve (a vacuum actuated valve in series on the heater hose which prevents coolant from entering the heater core when AC is engaged). I think there were some other comments about vacuum operated air diverters or doors within the ductwork as well. Sorry I don't have any AC diagrams or troubleshooting info for '68. Devon
You might want to check the cable (that is moved by the temperature wheel) to the valve; sometimes the plastic bracket of the outside cable breaks, so the inner cable doesn't work anymore: think wild Bill ('Topcat' on this board) has one for sale. You can check it by pulling the inner cable near the heater. Had the same problem with my 68 Cat (w/AC).
Stig, Remove both hoses from the heater core, take your garden hose and put the end in one of the openings of the heater core. If the water starts flowing through the heater core, it's okay. If not, use a high pressure steam cleaner to blow out whatever is blocking the heater core :TU: You can also try to use this (aggresive) drain cleaner stuff if you don't have a steam cleaner.
I had the same symptoms on my car. The problem was a stuck heater valve (this shuts off the heater core circulation while the AC is on). ... on my car, it's located in the hose between the heater core and the back of the block. Since I don't have a working AC, I simply replaced with a single line of hose... problem solved. Jeff ~
Like 75Riv said. My Electra 1968, it was the temparature cable. Broken tab. Repair, or there is one on Ebay. Goran
As stated, the plastic mounting tabs of the steel cables get brittle and can break off, and the heater does not work. Check the operation of the red ended heater cable to make sure its working freely, and is not siezed or bent. There is also a vacuum diaphragm to control AC or Heater mode, these are connected to the AC/Heater control and a vacuum source with rubber hoses. Check the hose connections for split ends, and ensure the diaphragms are working properly. The '68 Shop Manual has all the info.
