got a 1972 buick 350 from a skylark going into my 83 regal my mech cant find a manual on the 72 skylark hes trying to figure out where to set the distributor he knows the firing order just dont know where to set the piont at i hope im saying it right lol hope someone can help me also its a HEI distributor
Bring the number one cylinder to TDC ready to fire, set the rotor to the number 1 terminal on the cap. He should be able to figure it out. Firing order is 18436572 Number 1 is on the drivers side (Left side) 1 3 5 7. On the pass. side (right side) its 2 4 6 8
i spoke with him and he saidhe have the dist in but its poking out just a little and that he need a diagram to see where the cap should be pointing. he knows the firing order just need to know where the cap should be pointing i will post pictures of the engine asi saw it today also he told me the water pump pulley from my v6 231 dont not match the water pump on the 72 350 any advice on that?
"Poking out a little" you mean it isn't seated? Don't know everyone's experience level, so ask him if it's raised up a little, and whether he knows that the distr must engage to the oil pump. Look at the end of the dist see the end, that matches up with the oil pump slot...if you don't fit the dist into the oil pump slot the dist will not seat. Have him look down the hole the dist fits in, to locate the oil pump slot. As you install the dist, the gears make the rotor turn, so you you have to insert the dist 1 tooth before you would if the dist were going straight down into the oil pump........clear as mud huh?
I second what Gene said. The distributor shaft mates to the oil pump. The distributor must be fully seated or the oil pump will not turn, and you will have no oil pressure. The distributor in the picture is close as far as orientation. You will find that the big cap can hit the intake manifold when trying to adjust the timing. It may also interfere with the upper radiator hose, so you may need to look at that. Clearance will be tight where power wire and tach wire go into the cap. I believe the #1 wire is the first tower clock wise from the power/tach wire input on the cap. There are 3 different water pumps that came on Buick 350's. You need the right pulley for the pump you are using. There is a short, medium, and long body pump. Someone else may be able to help you further.

Go to TA Performance site and download the catalog. www.taperformance.com You'll have to talk to the 350 guys about matching pulleys. Ask Sean.
# 1 priority find yourself a mechanic that is familiar with the old cars.He's unfamiliarity with the problem will lead you to other problems,like a blown engine or something like that.Just my 2 cents. BrunoD.
you should use the water pump that matches the engine pulleys you will use, basicly use the v6 waterpump then
