im just tryng to figure out if they will fit my car and if i can pickup or need to ship interested in the 3.42
As long as you have a REAL GN Yes the gears will fit the 8.5. If someone swapped rear for a regular G-body rear end which is a 7.5 they will not fit the 7.5 rear. Covers pictured left is 10 bolt 8.5 the right is the 7.5 cover

Unfortunately that is true the 1970 original rear is a 10 bolt 8.2 the gear choices are 2.56 2.73 2.93 3.23 3.42 3.64 3.90 etc. Just do not have anything in this rear at the moment.
If you suspect that the car still has the original gears there is a two digit code stamped in the right side axle tube. Depending on corrosion, paint, undercoat, etc. It may be difficult to locate and read the original stamping. If it is a limited slip you can rotate the wheel once and count the rotations of the driveshaft. BUT, best way is to pull cover and find the teeth count of ring gear and pinion either by counting or finding the markings. Adding the appropriate carrier will convert your standard rear to limited slip when you also do the gears. You will also need an install kit when doing so.
