While making a left hand turn I heard a big pop followed by grinding. This was the result... Is the carrier housing complete trash now? Anyone know a great place to get a rebuilt unit? Once I get a new carrier can I just bolt my ring gear on with new bearings and the same shims and be good to go?
I would say the carrier is trash now. Looks like the cross shaft spun and then slipped out and broke. Monzaz on the board can set you up right with another one. Jim at JDrace.com You will be able to put the ring gear on the new carrier, so long as the gear is not damaged, but you will probably need to adjust the shims a little to set the backlash right. Jim is a knowledgeable guy and can guide you thru it better than I can.
Oh We can weld that up and make it all good again. NOT! LOL. ' That was from ther spider gears having metal fuse tothe spider gear shafts and lock up and your car motor will have more power to snap the rear easy. So you need a 3 series posi 2.93-3.23 How are your gears? Looks like they might be fine. Rebuild kit MAKE sure your try to clean that rear out real good from silt and debris. Jim
Found some parts and got the car assembled this weekend. I took some pictures of the contact pattern and wanted to run it by you gear heads to see if I'm in an acceptable range. This is now a 8.2 BOP with an auburn limited slip carrier 3.50 gear ratio Richmond gears had me set the backlash at .007 -.009 and the pinion (ONLY) to 25 inch lbs rotational force (that's stiffer feeling than I thought it would be!)
my 2cents: pinion is a bit too close to the ring gear as shown by the solid straight line deep in the tooth. reduce pinion shim and run another pattern
There's 2 10 thousandths shims in there now. Would removing one of them be enough, too much? I drove it to work in the current configuration about 10 miles. There's a bit of a drive side howl, coast side is quiet, is that what I should expect? Should I stop driving it?
Update: Drove it again today the howl is definitely getting worse, I'll be tearing it back apart again this weekend . The howl is really loud on light acceleration at about 40 mph. Hopefully its just because the pinion gear depth and I didn't do any damage.
Get on it quick...NO MORE driving. you say you only have .020 under the pinion??? Please double check the thicknesses. Usually .025 will be pretty good. Your pattern does look too deep in the ring. You have to have that pattern more up in the middle of the tooth depth - YOU MUST be absolutely sure the thickness of your shims and that the shims are seating flat around the pinion shim stem also . IF you remove the bearing and see the shim bent up the shaft in the middle inner diameter the shims are too small a inner diameter. This could be because the pinion is not back cut at the transition of the base of the stem to the head of the gear where the bearing seats. you will need to make the shim inner diameter larger slightly. Before putting anything back together clean the outer diameter edge as the shims are now stamped out and will fool your measuring if the flashing is not cleaned away. DIRT is another factor keep the seating surface clean from debris... Another thing. DO NOT use the crush sleeve YET... Find the pattern first then do the crush sleeve after we inspect the next pattern. then tear it apart and install the crush sleeve when you know it is a good pattern. JIM J D
Took it all back apart this weekend. I found the new pinion bearings are the root cause of the noise not sure why, they sound rough even turning by hand. How's the ware pattern looking on the gears? In total I drove it maybe 40 miles. Here are some photos... thoughts?
Pattern is not right. Sorry you are going to have to re do that. Your too deep. The pattern (shiney wear pattern does not even go across the gear face. drive side or coast side. Look where it is not even touching. Jim J D
Bearing issues. DID you replace the races of the bearings? Did you make sure all the bearings were clean before installing them?
I'll reset it and upload with new photos with the new pattern. Yes, I did install the new races in the housing. Think metal from the gears wearing could have fused to the bearings to cause that pitting?
Never saw anything like that before on a NEW bearing...??? Even used never saw actual dents in the rollers. Just bazaar...
Replacement bearings and gears will be here tomorrow. Here's a picture of the pinion races, they look very similar to the bearings with the pitting.
Got the new gears and bearings tonight. How's this pattern look on the new gears? Right now I'm at 12 thousandths backlash, and about 10 inch lbs on the rotational pinion preload.
MUCH BETTER. Tighten that backlash up to at least .010 .008-.010 some where in there. Richmond gears like .010 GM uses .006-.008
Yes, its a 65 BOP 10 inch. I used the big pinion shim that came with the kit. It was just a tad thinner than two of the thin ones that came in the kit. If I recall correctly it was 15 thousandths or 18 thousandths. I wrote it down but its at home. I buttoned it up last night with 9 thousandths backlash, after a thorough cleaning of the housing and axle tubes! I drove it to work today so far its quiet and smooth :TU: Thank you for all the help Jim.:beer
