Smokey was a close friend/mentor/neighbor's dog. As a kid in a neighborhood where there were few kids my age, he was my best bud. Used to walk down to the corner every day I went to school and be waiting for me when school let out. When my wife & I moved out to this area, we rescued a stray black lab with a white blaze on his chest like Smokey. We had him with us for almost 15 great years. Yes, we named him Smokey. Besides Smokey living 15 years, my wife & I went on our first date 7/15/82. Married 5/15/87.
I started using this name when I bought my TA and joined the old LS1.com back in October of 2000. Kind of used it on every site I've joined.
Yachtsmanbill is kind of self explanatory, but the Buick has a vanity plate on (the FIRST vanity tag Ive ever had) which reads BAD LAD. On the DMV form aside from being obviously obscene, they wanted to know what the letters represented. My reply was OUTSTANDING YOUTH. They liked it ... ws
455 in a 55'studebaker. Only problem is it still has the 430 in it I built 18 yrs. ago. Someday I'll assemble my 455. I wanted a different car with a different motor. I think I accomplished that part. Sure get lots of puzzled looks when I open the hood and there's no big block Chevy. This car went 13.60's when I built it. Now goes 11.70's. Same long block all this time.
My great grandparents-the Porcelli's-came from Italy to America in the early 1900's. Not exactly sure when or why, the name evolved to Purcella shortly after. 4 generations of Pucella's starting with my grandfather in 1914 to my son in 2001 are born proud Americans. (Ex-Porcelli) is just a nod to the family heritage.
the nickname "bigblock" was given to me by a guy that worked at the auto hobby shop on Keesler AFB back in the early eighties through the early nineties. Throughout that period of time I had a multitude of hot rods and most all of them had a big block in them so it was the way that Old Bill Gipson(Gipper) always remembered me. Gipper retired a few years before Hurricane Katrina hit and he ended up being a victim of the storm when he saved the lives of his family by getting them up in the attic of his house. He couldn't get in it himself and from his legs being in the septic water for so long he got an infection and they had to amputate both of his legs. He never recovered from the illness and passed away shortly after that. It was a sad day because Gip's laugh was known around the world to Air Force and other branches of service and he was always the best guy at the old hobby shop to make a bad day better somehow. I proudly still use the nickname "bygblok" because of my old friend Gipper. RIP buddy, we all miss you.
