Removed the Qjet on my new original 1970 GS 455 and need to get new carb to intake gasket(s). I think what was on there was not original and was too thick, as the choke couldn't close all the way and the accelerator cable alignment seemed wonky. There was a fiber one on the manifold that said "not for use on Buick 1969 or earlier" and another rather thick insulator type gasket on top of that. I could measure it, but off hand it looked like the whole stack was half an inch thick. RockAuto lists Victor REINZ G26652 that looks identical to the fiber one on the car and then lists FEL-PRO 60151 as well. What all is supposed to be on there? I want it to be proper/right/original so I don't have issues with the GS air cleaner, choke, and accelerator cable operation. Thanks in advance!
The 1/4" base gasket is a good one to use as it insulates the carburetor from manifold heat better. It shouldn't affect the throttle cable alignment or the GS air cleaner. http://quadrajetparts.com/thick-insulating-base-gasket-p-96.html You can use a thinner one if you want. Any of the 4 hole designs are going to work. http://quadrajetparts.com/quadrajet-base-gaskets-c-128_25_37.html
Ok cool thanks. Here's what was on there, over half an inch thick, causing the choke to only close part way. I have a thin metal one too; would that go below the RockAuto gasket or above?
You would need a gasket on top and below the metal one. It isn't correct though:grin: The metal acts as a heat shield. That's why I said use the 1/4" one.
Yeah I know, just want it to be right...just ordered two new gaskets on RockAuto and will use just those per the OEM setup and ordered a new AC Delco stage 1 fuel pump for it too since what's on it is leaking oil thru the crimped portion in the middle of the pump. Hope to ship off the carb tomorrow for a proper rebuild.
Andy, This is correct for a 1970 Buick 455: http://quadrajetparts.com/quadrajet-base-gasket-thick-1238658-1237019-1386092-p-100.html just a plain 4-hole spreadbore gasket. The combination of gaskets in your picture has many potenial leaks. If you have a 1970-72 factory intake, you can use the "correct" gasket or the 1/4" insulating gasket also works well.
Thanks, just ordered some OEM ones. It's a stock intake, stock carb, all stock. The 'stack' of gaskets is several layers of gasket plate gasket plate gasket plate, but its all joined together in one piece. It's getting tossed for a return to bone stock. I'm sure it did a good job of keeping the carb cooler but voided use of the choke, required longer carb bolts, squished the ram air foam down too far, undid the whole point of the air cleaner brace, etc. This car is going back to as original as I can keep it, within reason.
"Yeah I know, just want it to be right...just ordered two new gaskets on RockAuto" Don't think I've seen a single post ever on this website from anyone at Rock Auto with helpful advise on this topic.....just say-in......Cliff
I've had tons of good luck and great deals from RockAuto, not sure what you mean? The pic they had of the gasket on their website looked exactly like the original one I had and I got two for $9 shipped.
Couple of us provide a lot of good information on here, and own shops and SELL PARTS parts as well. Not to mention we will know EXACTLY what gaskets fit the application, and alternative gaskets in various thicknesses, etc. It will be unlikely anyone at Rock Auto knows much about these things other than what their computer screen or IPL tells them, and for sure NONE of them are on any of the Forums taking time out of their busy day providing free advice..........FWIW
I never understood why quad j gasgets had open single plane type on a dual plane intake. Maby the rebuild kits always include it for the buyer . If u have a dual plane sandwich it between 2 dual plane gasgets .that is sandwich the metal one, less heat under the carb is always good , unless ur in the artic
I've probably blessed internet forums with tens of thousands of dollars worth of first hand experience and mistakes myself, so you're preaching to the choir there. In fact here's another $6 worth of advice; the Rock Auto VICTOR REINZ G26652 gasket is NOT the same gasket shown in their picture of it, and is just a normal thin spreadbore gasket available at any Oreilly. I just placed an order with Quadrajet Parts for the correct .125" thick one, so they win by attrition of no one else cutting it anyway.
As per my earlier comments on this subject. IF you go to folks who specialize in these things, you can get personal service and the right part the first time. I may cost $1 or so more than Rock Auto, but you at least get the correct part, not shown the correct part in a picture then they ship you something else. Also, calling Rock Auto for personal service after you got the wrong gasket.....highly unlikely anyone their even knows what a 1970 Buick Q-jet is, let alone what gasket is supposed to go under it.....just say-in......Cliff
There is a Mopar, Thermoquad, 1/4 inch thick gasket that also works well, but it is open (single hole versus four). Rock Auto VICTOR REINZ G14589 {#3698365, 3751286, 3879786} Info with 4 Barrel Carburetor; Composite Part Image $6.17 I bought mine years ago at the Dodge dealer (I've not used it though since I went with a little taller Moroso open plywood-ish thing). No trouble with the choke linkage - although perhaps this is why mine is set for altitude. My RA seals are cut down about 3/8 inch.
