Yes that is correct. All GS 400's had factory painted on pinstripes. A gold GS from the factory would have white stripes as per this chart ......that I can't seem to locate right now. When I find it i'll post. ou:
If Champagne, Saddle, and Beige all got red stripes (combining both years) I could see it being an easy factory mistake to paint red stripes on a gold car, too. Especially if the painter was in a 'car a minute' hurry. Patrick
Thanks, fellas. I imagine there would've been some confusion as to whether a car was gold mist or champagne. I'm nervous about putting the stripes on. I might try using the tape first to see how I like it.
That's exactly the way I felt and that's what I did.... Annnnd, I HATED the way it looked. The problem was the color red was all wrong and the spacing between the two stripes was wrong. So, 2 years later I worked up the nerve to actually have the stripes painted on. I have to say, after the initial shock wore off, I can no longer even imagine my car without them. Love them! It makes the car look finished and more original. I get tons of compliments on the stripes all the time. If your going with white stripes it might be a little easier to determine whether or not you might like them on your car. I say try it, you'll like it!
Yea, your car looks bad-ass. I like that the stripes look kind of subtle. Makes for a more "handsome" car, keeping with the gentlemanly Buick theme. Any idea if there was a delete option on the stripes? I want to be 100% sure that they all came like this, whether the buyer liked it or not. That would certainly push me to do it.
I don't know if there was a delete option but, I am certain that pinstripes were included in the GS 400 package. Every new one that I saw in 1967 had them. That's what convinced me that my car should have them.
I'm finally getting around to doing the pinstripes with one caveat...I'm going to make them black. I don't like the white or the red with my color combination. With the black top and interior, I just think black pinstripes would make it look really sharp in bringing it all together. Is this sacrilegious?
That would be the way I would do it if it were my car. The factory should have done this way from the start. I don't understand why only red or white were the only two colors used. Probably for simplicity and cost concerns. Post up some pics after the stripes go on. Looking forward to seeing it! P.S. My first GS was the same combo as yours when I bought it. I later changed it to Autumn Maple. Here's a pic showing how the white stripes appeared on the gold car. Not bad but, i'm sure the black will look ten times better.
'67 GS400s were built right along with GTOs in a few plants and the GTO used the same double pinstripe except with it turned upside down. The GTOs got black or white stripes. Not sure why Buick didn't do black too since they had black paint right there. Veech, Paint them whatever color makes you happy. It's your car and if you paint them a color you don't like, you'll notice it every time you approach the car.
It is pretty cool owning the gold car that helped start this thread. If anyone wants detailed pictures of the pinstriping before I do body work please let me know.
Jacob, I would like to have photos to add to me collection. Photos of each end of each panel and around the door locks please. You can post here or send them directly to me email address: buquick@comcast.net
