What color were the optional disc brake rally wheels painted? Were they body color or all painted some version of argent silver? I'm thinkin' they were silver but someone yesterday tells me they were painted the color of the car.
The disc brake wheels were Chevy wheels. They were the only 14" wheels that would clear the 4 piston calipers used then. The Chevy wheels were silver but the Buick wheels were body color with trim ring and Buick specific center cap. I just researched this myself a few days ago while thinking about wheel choices.
They were body color for some colors and black for others, similar to the standard dog dish wheel. I don't know what body colors got body color wheels and which did not. I have a set off a '68 that are blue from the factory, I have also seen them with yellow paint.
Ok boys. I need those with a trained eye to tell me if you see any differences between the two rims pictured ? both 14 inch GM stamped rallyes. John Thanks Matt
I believe the slots are different. I was always told by a buick expert that the 14 inch buick wheel had a different slot than the chevy wheel
Correct, but that only applies to the '67 GS340. The Buick wheel has a different code by the valve stem I believe, not sure about other differences.
I believe they would be painted black? I have no proof of that, just basing it on pictures I think remembering seeing. I will have to see if any of my literature shows wheel colors. Like I mentioned before, the same painting rules applied to standard wheels with dog dish caps.
Mike is correct, a white car would not have white wheels on a '67 Buick A-body. I just checked the '67 Buick A-body assembly manual and sheet 0-2.1 "Chart - Exterior Car Color" shows all the available paint colors and the corresponding wheel paint color. The steel wheels are the same color as the body except cars that are Artic White or Ivory which are shown to have WDE-848 (black) wheel color. The other exceptions are the GS340 cars which have red rims and the Gold Mist cars are shown to have wheel color WDE - 3499 but the chart doesn't tell what that color is. Not sure if it is a typo or is that is maybe argent (silver) like a Chevy? Maybe someone here might know. I don't have it here with me but I seem to remember that the 1967 Motor Trend road test of the two 67 Buicks included a white GS400 that had disc brake wheels that appear to be painted black. I just took a look through my other vintage road tests from '67 and there are two different red GS400s tested with disc brakes and both have red wheels, my Blue Mist '67 still had the original blue paint on the DG disc brake wheels when we bought it back in the '80s.
The Buick wheel is on the car. Camaro rim on the ground. You can clearly see the slot has a different shape than the Chevy wheel. Also where the blue tape is on the Camaro wheel that area has a different bulge on the Buick. Mike could you match my Buick wheel to yours and see if the slots are the same ? I have never ran across another set like mine. I have had them since 1986 and they came off a 67. Thanks John
Really curious what the correct color for a Gold Mist car is. I thought it was supposed to be body color. http://www.v8buick.com/index.php?threads/67-gs400-with-disc-brakes-what-original-15s-to-use.261163/ Here is an older post I got some of my info from
The '67 DG rally wheel is a one-year-only wheel and it does have the unique shape that we see BUT it is not a unique to just Buick. The same DG 14"x6" wheel was used on Chevelles, Camaros, and Nova. The Chevy wheel in the pictures is not a '67 Chevrolet wheel, that's why it doesn't match the Buick wheel. Find an original disc brake '67 Chevelle, Camaro, or Nova and the 14"x6" DG wheels you will find are the same as our Buicks. Kelsey Hayes made the wheels and they were all the same, not unique to each marque. However, to add to the confusion, the 15"x6" rally wheel on the '67 Corvettes also carries the DG code and it has a slightly different face than the 14"x6" DG wheels. I went up into the attic of garage and snapped a photo of one of the original DG wheels from my '67. The paint code for the Gold Mist cars is puzzling. I would like to find a color chart that shows what WDE - 3499 is. I guess it could be a typo but it could also be the code for silver. Sure would be cool to find an original, unrestored Gold '67 GS400 to help solve the mystery. The disc brake '67s are pretty unusual. Lots of '67s have disc now, but most were added. You can spot one by looking under the master cylinder and finding the small brass valve. It's different that the valve used on later models. I've attached a photo.
Makes me wonder, if I am so set on keeping this car original appearing if I should source factory style parts for my disc swap or just use my disc brake conversion kit off my 72.
Use the '72 Stuff. The factory changed the design of the disc brakes for a reason, the later stuff simply works as good or better and doesn't have the leaks associated with the 4-piston calipers.
The '68 assembly manual shows that the steel wheels ( or rallye wheels) were body color except for White and Ivory which had black wheels and Ivory Gold had wheel color code WE3720, WE3720 is listed as Med. Gold. Cars that came with full wheel hub caps all got black painted wheels.
