I found a 66' Skylark Gran Sport Convert for sale and would like some input on it's value. It looks like a CA car little to no rust but is missing all kinds of parts. The engine and transmission are not original and doesn't run (Buick 350 and 2 speed). There is no hood, front bumper, console, back seat or top. The seller got it in a lien sale, and is asking $8k. I know they only made 1400 of these with Automatics. What's your opinion? Devin
If it's a true GS and it looks like it is all the GS specific parts are gone. Hood, scoops, engine, trans, engine mounts, frame mounts, exhaust manifolds, radiator, radiator cross bars. etc Not worth no where near 8K with all that missing
The battery was on the drivers side, so that points to it being a GS. The vin should be 446676xxxxxxx. I'm with Todd.... I don't see $8k of value there in that condition. If ALL the parts were there, 6-8k might be close. I'll throw some numbers out.. To make it a non-numbers matching car, it needs engine & trans ($800), engine frame mounts, adapter plates, and rubber mounts ($350), exhaust manifolds ($300), Rear sump oil pan and pickup ($300), Hood with GS chrome ($400), Radiator ($300), bumper, top, seat, etc, .... so let's say an easy $3000 worth of parts just to make it a complete GS. GS value is in the parts, and the parts aren't there. A $3k offer might be a realistic starting point, IF it's a relatively rust free body. Just my opinion.
That car is a great candidate to be combined with a rusty donor GS to make a nice car without excessive rust repair costs. If the sheet metal is as nice as you say, it would cost far more than 8k to repair a rust bucket. For example, I know of a very highly optioned 67 GS400 hardtop that is complete but very rusty for $1500. If I hadn't already just finished a full frame off restoration including all the rust fixing, these two cars could be combined and I would spend 15k less than I did.
Wow, those parts do add up fast as I am learning with my hardtop. My car does have some rust but it is a numbers matching car witch I payed too much for in the first place 8.5k. I really want a convertible but, I can't bring myself to stripping my hardtop of it gs parts. We shall see?
The vert could still be a nice project even if you don't restore it to all-original 'correct' condition with a Nailhead. A 350 might be fine. I just think the 8k is too much considering it's barely a GS anymore with all the missing parts, and it should be priced accordingly. Use the value/cost of the missing parts as a bargaining technique!
I got a pic of the data tag. Body paint is DD. Since it is a convertible, does that mean the top is the same as the body, ASTRO blue?
That's odd. The code for the top should be a number: 1= white 2= black 4= blue 6= beige Most likely it's just a human error, it was stamped wrong. 198 is black buckets. 026298 is a manifest number used in the Fremont plant.... basically a log book showing what options the car was built with. 8K will buy this running, driving, Skylark. There is a lot 'wrong' with the description, but you can use it as an example to show that GS seller he's asking too much. https://racine.craigslist.org/cto/d/1966-buick-skylark-gs/6384705644.html
Thanks for the info on the data plate. I will pass on the other Skylark add to the seller to see if he is willing to lower his price. That add had a funny 327 hp transmission?
Devin, any update on this? Too bad it is missing so many of the pricier parts. That would give you more license to make a pro touring type car though.
Well I just had the Vin checked. It isn't stolen but, the seller is not the same as the person who registered it? I am planning on looking at the car next week if the seller is willing to be flexible with the price.
The seller is not willing to budge on the 8k price. He thinks it a steal at that price because of a red 66' 4 speed convertible that auctioned for 60k+. I'll keep in touch with him and see where it goes. Thanks.
Lien sale or not . If you really want the car tell him to meet you at the DMV with all his paper work and see what they say. Otherwise it is a parts car no matter how we feel or want to believe. Good luck I feel for you bud.
Find the person on the title. They may not even know where the car is. Have them go get the car an buy it from them
I remember that auction, seems like it was quite a while back. I haven’t seen another sale near that price since. The 4 speeds are less common though with about 436 built. Too bad he won’t deal because this looks like a decent body to start with.
Well I certainly appreciate all the input guys. There's always another car out there. I'll focus on my 66' hardtop GS. Thanks
