My speedo bounces. I've been told it is the speedo cable. Is it the actual internal cable or the external sheathing that is causing this? Barring that, what is the appropriate length for the speedo cable for a non-cruise control car?
It's pretty easy to fix the bounce. Pull the cable off the back of the speedo and the cable can be pulled out of the sheathing. Clean/lube and reinstall. It'll take about 20 minutes
If its to your 4 speed car, your going to need a 70" cable. Its gotta go under the bell and around to the rear passenger side of the Muncie
Yep, that's the one I'd already looked at but wanted to confirm before I pulled trigger. Been there, done that a time or two. Is it generally the actual moving part of the cable, the core that has a kink or something? It smooths out as it gets faster. What is a good lube to use. I have some graphite assembly type lube, some lithium white grease and good old axle grease. I think I used axle grease last time, just smeared it good, wiped off the excess and snaked it back down the sheath. Nope, the 4 speed car is all good and having swapped the trans, it was quite apparent it wasn't that short. I'd have guessed it longer than 70" though.
I have the same question. However, I need the speedo cable length for a 1970 GS455 with a console shifter automatic and factory cruise control? I looked at OPGI and their speedo cable is backordered until September. Has anyone used any of the speedo cables on the Rock Auto site? I looked at them but was not sure of the quality, they looked kind of flimsy. Also, would the speedometer cable from other GM A bodies work? I figure if I can find the correct length some of the other parts suppliers that have Chevelle or GTO product lines might be more likely to keep in stock.
