I will be in Camden South Carolina for the Whippet Nationals. I will be entering 3 of 6 of my whippets. FWIW, next week I will be at Indianapolis at the ' World's Largest Flyball Tournament" at the fairgrounds. It's our Nationals as well which we finished 5th in the nation. Here is shot of my 13 month pup getting ready to race in Camden.
Pretty dog! Glad you included the picture; otherwise some may get the wrong idea about what goes on at the ‘Whippet Nationals’! Patrick
Lol Whippet Nationals consists of a straight race typically 200 yards. Speeds range from 35-42+ mph. And also a Uval which can be from 270 or more. Usually it's 300 or 350 yards. All dogs start from a break box. There is an award banquet, drinks, jello shooters, pudding shots...
They call them "the poor man's racehorse." They are probably the easiest sport dog to live with as compared to the rest of the pack which consists of Border Collies, Jack Russells, staffy Bulls, Sports mixes, and lurchers.
Yup!! They get towed it around in coolers as the banquet goes on throughout the evening... For two nights
I grew up around the corner from a greyhound track and a leadout was my first job. That time of my life was a blast and I'm still close to a lot of the people I met while working there for almost 15 years. In fact, a lot of the trainers had whippets as pets. This is me as a young, strapping lad with Swedish Episode. Anyone familiar with greyhound racing in the late 80's and early 90's knew about this all American female flyer.
Several of the whippet breeders breed Greyhounds as well. And of course race them in Florida. One of the guys won $75k s couple years ago with his dog winning severalnraces. They are trying to get me involved band get a grey to race...thinking about it
"This Whippet " was one of the first cars I saw when I walked into "Streetworks Hot Rods" 6 years ago. Now I work there part time. Cool looking dogs! Larry
They're amazing animals. Which track in Florida? Looks like the animal activists and politicians are trying to stop racing there as well. Florida accounts for 13 of the less than 20 tracks still in operation throughout the country. The track I worked at - Raynham/Taunton Greyhound Park - still holds the record for largest total handle for one year: $249 million in 1989.
You know, that is a good question! I need to ask Jason about that. Yes I am on Facebook and I follow the guy or the page that's labeled as 'paint the trail." He shows what's going on in the Greyhound kennels and shows with the crazy activist are doing. I would like to try open course in with my whip it's because some of these people do it as well. I used to hunt with my Jacks a lot with their collars and shovel...

Only time I ever went to a dog track was on a job in Mobile -- country boy republican I was with just had to go so he bet on "Bark Obama". Good times.
