I found an old picture of my 68 Riviera. The picture could'nt of been taken any later than 1973 because of the house its parked in front of. Its wearing a set of triple white wall tires. My late uncle years ago verified that it had 'triple whites" when he bought it new. Does anyone know the brand of the original tire? Anyone have their original triple white wall spare? Did the triple white come as an 855.15 or the H70-15? Just curious
'68 Riviera Tires Jayson - according to the '68 Features book: Not sure of the make, or which was the 3 x WW (Radials or Wide Ovals?) Standard Tires were 8.45x15 BW or WW Optional Radials were 225R -15 WW Optional Wide Ovals were H-70-15 WW or Red Lines I would think they purchased tires from various suppliers. :beer :TU:
I cannot tell what brand or if they are 3WW but here are the tire options" Standard with the "A9" option were WW 8.45 x 15 Optional tires -Radial ply WW 225-R-15 with the "A9" option -Wide oval redline tires H70-15 with the "A9" option. -Wide oval WW tires H70-15 with the "A9" option. My guess is that they were the 8.45 x 15 tires since your order sheet does not show optional tires. Were the tires like the last two in this picture? (the last two have one thin-one thick-one thin stripe).
thats the tire! Just like in the last two pictures. Wider center stripe with two small white pinstripes. Maybe thats the $40.74 difference in the sticker price?
If the 3WW tire is the optional tire it would be this one: F9 PW7 Wide Oval White Wall Tire (H70-15) = $31.58. Did Firestone only use the "Wide Oval" name? Do you want that tire option added to your sticker?
The wide oval name I think was used as a generic name to describe performance oriented tires. like the W02 option on my 70. It lists super wide oval tires which is generally considered to be the G60-15 Goodyear Polyglas's I could swear the Riv tires were BF Goodrich. Either "Silvertown" or "Town & Country" . I remember seeing the spare from that car when I was a kid. How I can remember stuff like this amazes me. And I cant remember stuff like anniversaries and birthdays. In 1967, only the Riviera GS was available with the wide oval tires. They were H-70-15 tires and were available with a white line (a small one) or red line. Mine had the red line and it still has it's original spare. It's a GoodYear Speedway Wide Thread. The Wide Oval name was used by Firestone but the therm is often used to describe the 60 and 70 series tires. A griend of mine has a 72 Riviera GS and it also has it's original GoodYear spare. I think it's the same size as mine and it also as the narrow stripe but it's white rather than red. The 1967 non GS Rivs had standard 8.45X15 tires, the single stripe whitewalls were available as an option on these. There were also radial tires available, their size was 225-75-15 and they had a narrow white stripe like the wide thread tires. There were also larger 8.85 tires avaialble as an option and I think that they were those with the triple whitewalls (but I could be wrong). Nice pictures Phil! I love the look of the non radial tires. I did some checking and nobody seems to reproduce any H70-15 tires . I would love to get a set of the triple whites for it one day. I think it would really make the car.
I don't think that this size will ever be reproduced as there were not many cars that had them new. As for the triple whitewalls, I think that they are currently available in the larger size (8.85x15).
i bought three chrome big car spares on ebay this summer. two had never been put on a car and one looked like it only has about a hundred miles on it. one of the unused tires is a straight tread goodyear. i think the spare was from a 68 model. the other two tires are radials and look like they are the same radial tire mold but one is a goodyear and the other i think is a uniroyal(?). one is a J78-15 and the other is an H78-15. i could be persueded to sell/trade any/all of these tires. i just boaght them for the awsome wheels.
What size is it and what type of white wall does it have? I remember talking to Dennis Manner at the Centennial. His Riv had the triple whites on it. He told me he kept buying unused spare tires until he had a full set.
ooops! ou: well i dug out the tires in the garage today and now that i have my facts straight i will pass them on to you. the (unused) straight tread tire is a UNIROYAL Fasttrack Belted H78-15. here is a pic. i am not familiar with the term triple white.
Thats a nice looking wheel and tire combo. I can see why you bought them. The optional tire for at least the 68-69 Rivieras was a tire that had three white stripes in stead of just one white stripe. The center stripe was thick (almost like a conventional white wall) with two thin white pinstripes. you can make out the sideall in the picture Mike posted of the optional tire combinations. I did find a set of 4 H70-15 white pinstripe tires at an old Firestone the other day. Still sitting on the shelf. Im trying to pin the guy down on a price. Im afraid he thinks he has gold on the shelf instead of four old tires. Im not even sure I would trust 35+ year old tires on my car
Jason My Dad had a set on his 66 cat it was about 67-70 if i remember they were generals i cleaned them enough!Don't know if they were oem but they were making them.
NOS Firestones!!! I wound up buying that set of Firestone Wide Ovals I mentioned in my last post. He actually had 5 of them. I bought all 5 for 200.00. The condition of them are amazing for original tires. Theres no sign of dryrot. Theyre still soft and pliable. Its like they were made last week. I gave them I light scrubbing when I got them home. They were absolutely filthy. You can still make out the colored bands on the tread. Three of them still have the sticker. Check these out.. How many sets of NOS H70-15 Wide Ovals do you think are still left in the world?
I just picked up a 1968 Riv. I have a picture of the spare which I'm quite positive is original. I'm in the same position as you because this car is 100% original besides the snow tires on the back. Either way, I'd like to get the set of triple White walls since I am sure it came with them. The car was sitting 43 years in a ladys garage. When she first asked me if I would be interested, I casually said no. Then I seen the car in person and said "I change my MIND". There is a very interesting history about the car too. The original owner bought it and live 1 block from where I grew up, and the second owner that bought it in 1976 lives 2 blocks from where I currently live...so bizarre.
Hi Brian, Yes, that is most likely the original spare or at least one of the original tires. Size should be 8:45 X 15. Buick used 2 suppliers, Firestone Deluxe Champions and Goodyear Power Cushions. Incidentally, I dont think the "NG" that appears on the tire is a factory marking...I use that acrynom to indicate "NO GOOD". Hope this helps, Tom Mooney
