I haven't checked mine yet, but so far I've seen two vids on you tube so far where people have issues with the retro roller lifters exposing the oil band at full lift. One was a Holden V8 Other was a 340 LA Mopar Im curious when I pull my intake and look at mine closely..... like I should have upon assembly if my oil bands are being exposed at full lift. I find it ironic after the roller install on my old block, my hot idle pressure dropped to 10 psi..... it was at 22 psi with the flat tappet. My hot idle pressure is still only 10@ hot idle with the new build, but same cam and lifters
Heres the vid, this is exactly what I thought I saw on my block before completing assembly. I just thought "nah your seeing things, its fine" Yeah, right asshole
this can be an issue with alot of motors. especially at higher lift. I know even though a chevy lifter is same diameter as our bbb, the band and seat location and weight are all different. the lifters with my comp cam set set at least .025 lower in the seat than my stk lifter in comparison
Mark, My TA hyd roller oil hole is exactly in same location as solid (chevy) rollers. Oil pressure was never that low at idle on up with the hydralics. Your option might be to use 20-50 oil. Did you bore gage all your bearing clearances or use that plastic crap? You are already running the H.V. pump gears aren't you.
I wouldn't pull intake. Take that bore scope camera of yours and shove it down the head oil drain hole.
There was an issue with lifters as jim wiese told me, maybe look into it in the 400-430-455 forum. But its about 2 years old. Issues should be ok now
It's not the hole, it is the band that is higher in the Chevy lifters than the Buick lifters. I learned a long time ago to not use the Chevy lifters in a high lift 215. They were flat tappet, not rollers though.
My hot idle oil pressure was always 20/22 even on the hottest days with 10/30 oil with the flat tappet. When I put the roller in, it dropped to 10 @ hot idle, then the #3 rod bearing spun. I cant say for sure that the two are directly related. The new build, using the original '71 block, TA crank ( had it for years) new rods, pistons, roller cam and lifters, blah blah blah, Exact same hot idle oil pressure, AND the lifters have a hard time pumping up.
I tried that once, and couldn't get a good clear view, I think I went down a pushrod hole. I tried the drainback hole first, but the ledge of the block is in the way. Im going to have a looky see again. I'll try the PCV hole too
Yes, I put my HV gears in before the second drive of my new build, didn't make a whole lotta difference.
If I cant get a convincing view with my camera, Im going to pull the intake, otherwise its gonna bother me I cant stop thinking when "I thought" I saw a tiny portion of the oil band exposed before the intake was on, but I never took a closer look
Here are TA hyd roller, GM, & Rhodes flat tappet hyd side by side for you to see band/ oil hole location. I didn't have the low O.P. issue with the TA's. Using the short pass oil gallery plug? Throw some solids in there....,
Also probably depends on base circle dia or cam brand. .365 lobe will pop lifter up higher if base circle is larger dia. The base on my Erson is smaller than a stock factory cam grind. When did you change the frt cover to the TA?
So take the intake off put the lifter on the high side and run the drill on the oil pump and see if the oil leaks out then you will know. This just makes go more and more to the solid lifter route. Unless you can get that camera in there somewhere and run the drill. Or take all the plugs out and use the starter and stick that camera down the pvc hole. then at least the motor will be in motion. See that 2nd video of the Demon, ran a 9.85@135 Averaged 10.0 @ 133 TSO GN would take it out.
Post that video of the Demon Guy. I'm interested in the new mid engine vette. Yep Mark, Guy is right, f the oil band crap, throw solids in there.....
When I put the roller in, it dropped to 10 @ hot idle, then the #3 rod bearing spun. I cant say for sure that the two are directly related. Was the above with same timing cover, oil pump, and same exact clearances?
Jus The video is right after Demko's video just watch his and you will see it. Well, that is where it was not showing it now I am sure you look up Demon race you will find it. It was a dark Grey Demon. A blue 60's Mustang cleaned him up with some nitrous but he beat most everybody else.
