I need to strip and repaint my valve covers. I don't have access to equipment such as media blasters, so I really need to use some solvent to remove the old paint. I am wondering if anyone has recently found/used a good paint stripper now that methylene chloride based strippers are banned by the EPA and nowhere to be found.
You're not going to like this, and I hate to pass it on, but drain cleaner, which is basically lye, works great. Just be careful. Google it. And do not use on aluminium:
I saw a product at AutoZone a few months ago. It comes in a blue spray can and is labeled “Aircraft Remover.” Now, I’m not saying that if there’s a stray aircraft in your yard that all you have to do is spray it onto the aircraft to make it all go away, but they started making it more environmentally responsible (read: weaker formula), so don’t fall for the hype. Try this stuff instead: https://www.aircraftspruce.com/cata...IxBCptWMTLbdvW0nFmse7TRkX3SLC2HsaApLZEALw_wcB
Thanks Joe. I was hoping that the aircraft remover would do double duty as both a paint remover and a way to remove stray aircraft from my yard, but i won't fall for it ). And thanks for the tip re ekostrip.
If you are not in a hurry drop them in a bucket of hot water and a cup of citric acid powder for a week. The paint will come off and they will be rust-free. Wash them off and paint
I use a KleenStrip product called Aircraft Paint Remover. Strangely nuff, in small print it said," Do not use this on aircraft." I will add , do not get any chemical stripper near seams. It can penetrate the seam , reactivate and ruin a paint job. Jim
