Boring work while I wait for the second gas tank to arrive. I started block sanding the hood and wasn’t happy with the results. We let the epoxy primer we used sit too long. Our best option was to strip it and start over. I made a time lapse video with a cheap knock off go-pro. Not having an adequate compressor sucks! I have an 80 gallon that will be installed, but I need to get my electrical set up to support it.

I hope to be driving it around this weekend.

What splatter paint did you use for the trunk?

I used the GM brand. Best deal I found was on OPGI during their Memorial Day sale. Bought two cans for $47 ($20 shipping!) for both of my ‘70s.

I was really happy with the result and did limited prep work. Next time I’ll use a black primer as my base coat. I did a couple of rough spots in green self etch and sprayed the splatter right over it. If you zoom in where the trunk meets the left inner wheel house, you can seem some green

Gas tank saga part 3. Showed up without a filler neck. Had a meeting I joined at 11:00 and couldn’t bail out on, FedEx at 11:03. On one of the recent threads created about shipping issues: I posted that I have NEVER had problems sending or receiving. I jinxed myself. This is a joke. FedEx knew there was a problem when they relabeled the package because the barcode had damage and still dropped it off. Rockauto is also a joke for not having a customer service phone number. They are reviewing my claim because of a second damaged tank and will contact me. This will delay my project another week, at a minimum.

I'm sorry, that's always really tough. I'm in the same boat with my Tremec Magnum from SST, showed up with the input shaft poking out the side of the box and fluid all over the place. I rejected the shipment and was expecting to just get shipped another one, but the shipment got lost in return to the sender. So I've been delayed for 3 weeks. Shipping companies just don't seem to care that much.

RockAuto lost me as a customer. Spent over $3000 with them throughout the years for personal and our business. After the second broken tank, the refused to ship me a 3rd because it “simply didn’t make sense” - their words. They did suggest buying another brand tank. Huh? I asked if they were going to stop selling tanks as a result and they closed out my ticket before giving me a shipping label. Rockauto doesn’t offer a customer service number. So I started randomly dialing extensions before I finally got someone on the phone.

Anyway... my new tank arrived from autozone via FedEx undamaged and much better packed. $153.99 to my door, $8.00 more than RA. Back to the build..

This new crap that some one can't call and speak to a human being is BS. I quite buying from places that you can't call. Glad you got a good tank, hope everything goes well with the installation. Take a pic when you're done. Love to see when the underneath from the back is cleaned and detailed.

    Fernando,

Here is another shot with tail pipes installed. The motivation was needed and appreciated this weekend. Thanks! Felt good to get it off stands, it’s been about a month. Back onto the hood.

Small update that took a lot of time. We are just about road worthy now.

I spent the last few days working on getting the timing right. Following Larry’s thread, I had the car dialed in. Took it around the block and it’s a whole new car.

But.... it still wouldn’t cold start. It would crank, crank, crank.. etc.. nothing. Pour a little gas down the carb and it would start right up. I figure it’s because it doesn’t have a choke. My dad keeps reassuring that it should be fine with the warm weather, but I’m stubborn and am convinced it’s because a lack of choke. I set up a divorced choke and get the same result.

So now I think back to assembling everything and figure it must be because of a clogged fuel filter. Rip the filter out and I just start laughing... I had the filter in backwards to where the spring loaded valve was facing the carb side. Now it’s a totally different car! (Again)... I retimed it just to make sure everything was in line. The benefit of all my work was a functioning choke and custom rod. I also installed a washer jug and overflow I bought from Stage 1 restoration.

My hood scoop is mounted and the hood is down my dads for paint. It’s going to be really humid the next couple of weeks, but we ordered the paint and hope to have a good break to prime and paint. Once the hood is on we will get some good driving in and see how it does.

Thanks! I spent a few years planning before I had a car to do it, but it’s all been worth the wait so far. Good luck on your build, the full-size cars don’t have as much aftermarket support but anything can be done with the right approach. I just checked your thread out- you got a nice clean car to start with!
