Hello , does any one have photos or info on the taillight area that is supposed to be blacked out on a light color GS? I am curious if front fender reveal around the headlamp bezel is supposed to is supposed to be painted black as well. Any info on the paint code for this area and sheen of the paint would be helpful.

    Thanks

Yes Matt the tail panel and the inside area surrounding the tail lights on the quarter extensions gets blacked out even on black cars. Here's a pic of mine .......

I have read that same applies to the fender area surrounding the headlight bezels also gets blacked out, but I don't know that for certain.

It kinda bugs me when I see a lot of '67's that have been repainted and look nice until you look at the rear of the car and see body color where it should be black. They look much better when done the right way (Black) IMHO.

I missed that when the car got painted , I will have to go back and do that, thanks for the photo it shows clearly where the mask line is . Would you say that’s a semi -gloss or flat?

That's an easy fix, pop the extensions and tail lights off and wa-la. I would say semi-gloss or a satin black is closest to original.

Yeah definitely going to get that right , it is a pretty interesting detail that must have slowed down the assembly line somewhat , without blacking it out it would be a negative visual impact on our green car for sure sure.

does that apply to all colours on the 67 gs400? my blue gs400 conv just has paint. i would like to see more pictures of how the factory did it. if its easy to fix i'd like to do that to mine also.
thanks for the post. been wondering that myself since i've seen 1 67 like that before

I don't have any more pics, but I can tell you that 67's of ALL colors got the blacked out tail panel. It's really simple to paint it properly, just look at the pic I posted, follow the imaginary line over from the quarter extensions towards the trunk opening and mask it off, remove the tail lights, the extensions and then paint it black.

Nick is correct. All '67 GS400s have this area blacked out in a dull satin finish. The chrome tail panel ribbed area, if "correct" is the criteria, is painted black.

Right Rick, that edge would be partially visible and kinda stick out on any color car except black so yeah, that area should be painted too.

The car I had painted had been in bare metal for twenty plus years , I have a couple of spare quarter extensions that still have paint on them ... after looking at that I figured I better ask. When I repainted the fender gills I used SEM Trim Black , that is what I was going to use for the black portion on the trunk molding as well is seems like it would be fine for these blacked areas? It is a satin black.

Hmmm, from these pictures,it appears that the tail light bezel top surface(s) are painted black. Are they?
