Picked up a short block assembly from a friend. Going to make her run with this, and include the matching numbers engine with the car when sale time comes someday.
That’s exactly what I have done with my Stage 1 when I built my engine back in 2012, I rebuilt the original as new and it’s safely stored in my garage and run a forged internal 462 making about 475 hp in the car that keeps me happy. It’s the smart thing to do with these rare Muscle cars to preserve them and enjoy them at the same time.
Well, The numbers matching block had more than just a spun rod. I think it had all 8 spun, and two Mains were probably close to going away as well, but no damage to block. 3 cylinders however sat with moisture in them, and will require either being bored or sleeved and bored standard to match the other 5 beautiful bores. It looks to me like it may have had a head gasket issue, and got coolant into 3 cylinders, and also into the oil pan. Then was started and ran sucking water off bottom of pan, oil starved the crank, did the damage, then was shut down and left to sit with standing coolant. I didn't buy the car with the intention of performing a restoration or a $3000 Buick engine rebuild. This short block assembly will be installed with the original heads and intake, and the matching numbers block, a standard grind crank and 8 pistons and rods will be provided down the road, and someone else can make the decision to either bore all 8 cylinders, or sleeve 3.

Bought some new 14x7 steel wheels to mount a new set of G70-14 white stripe Firestone Wide Ovals and poverty caps on the car. Had paint custom mixed into spray bombs. Found out I have to paint the wheels black as a ground coat to make the color match the car. Sprayed over light gray powder coat, the color is too silvery-green. One of these days, I should probably figure out a place here on the board to start a build thread, let this ad die.
Hi Tom, what is the factory delivered wheel and tire option to this car? Do you have a copy of the Sloan Docs on this car if please post.
Hi Rich.... In one of my pictures above, you can see the factory body color spare with a G78-14 Whitewall polyglas that is correct according to the sloan docs. So, body color steel wheels with poverty caps and white stripe tires on Sloan docs.
Man!!!.... I can hardly wait to get these on the car to see how it changes it's demeanor. I also have a set of near NOS Poverty caps coming for the car as well.
Here is the unused G78 whitewall in one of our ‘72s. I’m glad to see you went with a thin-line instead! This thing is ugly! Your car is going to look great with the fresh wheels and rubber.
Very cool Tom, that it is a true no wheel option GS Stage 1 ,meaning 14 x 6 painted plain steel wheel with dog dish cap and optional G78-14 whitewall polyglas tires, blackwall G78-14 would have been standard tires. If you have Sloan docs please post or what are the factory options on this car?
Several questions - if ya don't mind sharing. What year is the short block you picked up? Secondly, was any measuring done on the 3 walls-will a .030 bore get the corrosion or will it take more?
