I am doing a gs clone on my 71 custom and I was planning on painting the rocker trim in the gs red stripes just wondering if anyone knows what type of paint I should be using and what is the name of the red I should be looking for. Thank you in advance as always guys. -Neel
I never thought of the 3m tape.is that a typical practice? I still think I probably want to paint it but I would like to see what yours came out like with the tape. How close is that international tractor red to the original? -Neel
Both of my GS's have the 3M tape stripe. Looks great and you really cant tell its vinyl pinstripe. Its common practice for me. p

Most of the top restorers in the county use the 3M tape. In concours judging, we allow the tape and do not deduct points for its use. It's whats on my cars too.
This is starting to sound like the logical way to go to me lol. I will probably order the tape today. Unless I can find it locally.
Either will work fine, the striping tape will be a little thinner, just make sure you clean the mouldings with alcohol, thinner etc, wrap around the edges and around to the back side a couple inches
In my opinion, very close to the orig/faded paint that was under the 3m vinyl tape. Now i painted these stripes maybe 10 years ago and still look good. in my neck of the woods, a 70-72 GS is very rare. I believe that in the past, this topic was discussed in detail, on this site.
i just bought that tape and did my rockers. man it looks good and i did nt have to paint. thanks for the tip johnny
Johnny, Do you have any extra left over from years ago you would sell? I'm not having any luck finding tomato red
I remember painting a few sets of these back in the day. I probably even saved one of the paint cans to have the # on hand. What a PIA. The tape sounds too easy - Seems like it'd feel like cheating but I'll have order a roll, lol.
On our old Yellow 72 Stage1, the previous owner had not only done the red tape stripe on the rocker trim, but he also used 1/8th red tape and did the vinyl top trim where the top is edged to the quarters and behind the rear glass, and I have to admit, I agree with him in that the factory should have also done this to the trim on the GS cars, it's subtle, but it adds a little something that just looks right!
I did this to mine after seeing a car photo on the board with this add; it really looks sharp, low cost and is easy to do. Tip: take your time and do a 1/3 section at a time!
