I have a 69 Skylark custom, when I first got the car the wipers wouldn’t work. Then they did I replaced the wiper motor, and they worked. When I turned them on recently they didn’t work. I’m thinking maybe it’s the wiper switch. Is there any trouble shooting I can do. Thanks in advance Jaye
You can test the wiper motor by bringing power and ground directly. You can also test the switch and wiring if you have a continuity tester, by testing where the connector plugs into the motor. Here is a little diagram, that might help.
I had the same problem exactly. What worked for me on my 66 Wildcat was cleaning the connectors on the wiring side. I cleaned the connectors on the wiper side as well for good measure. I used contact cleaner and fine steel wool. After that, the wipers worked flawlessly. Hope this helps. After all, the wiring is our cars is 50+ year old.
Jaye did you ever find the problem? I just repaired a 70 skylark and the trouble was a poor ground by the switch.
I haven’t found it yet everything past the bulkhead is me new so I was figuring it was the switch. I’ve been looking for a switch before I take it apart in case that’s the issue. Poor ground by the switch does make since for issue also. I’ll check that when I get an opportunity. Thanks Jaye
Bruno , what are you asking for one, pics please. Also do I have to take the dash pad off to get the cluster face, then the wiper switch.
Yep, pad comes off, drop the column, disconnect the speedo cable from the speedo, remove the dash harness from the two supports behind the cluster, then you can get the cluster forward enough to get a 1/4" ratchet in between the metal dash and cluster
Wow, that’s going to be a good bit of work-update: I took the bottom plate off the steering column and can see the wiper switch wires. On the washer side is lt blue&white, wiper side lt blue & white, black, and black & orange. Can anyone say which wire is hot and which is hot when switch is on. I checked the wiper fuse and it’s ok. Thinking back it may not be the switch. I used the hot wire from the wipers to turn on my fuel pump, worked great. One day I backed the car out to let it warm up and came back out and it was off & wouldn’t start back(fuel pump not coming on) checked and no power from wiper wire. Came back from work it started right up. I moved the power wire for the fuel pump. Was out one day and wipers don’t work, so somewhere the power for the wipers is shorting out. Wiring
