I seem to recall reading somewhere that some of the replacement wood grain decals would do this and it was recommended that you applied them over the old wood grain decals to help alleviate the problem somewhat.

Still not much help, since you didn't have any to start with.

 

Thanks all. I've seen some of the woodgrain decals advertised as,
"DASHBOARD DASH WOODGRAIN INSERTS NEW BACK LIT TRANSLUCENT".
I may have purchased an inferior part, perhaps there is a better quality part for me that would correct this.

I've found two different non-polarity specific bulbs. I tested them with a couple of jumpers and they light up in either polarity, center ground or center hot.

I'm going to try in the tach, glove box, ashtray and heater controls on my car. I'll report back the results once I've had a chance to see how they look. I don't think they will be dimmable. They do appear to be narrow enough to fit in the ashtray fixture which is very snug.

Yes, I bought one set of those Shuyees but I wanted to try the other Phinlion type I listed to see if they were any different. Certainly more expensive. I'll do a comparison.

 

Checked through this thread and lots of great info. I was looking for a flasher that’s compatible with my led upgrades . The link you posted for a grounded flasher from Amazon is unavailable. Maybe someone has had success with another ? I’m also looking for LED bulbs for my rear armrests in my 68 convertible .

OK guys, so this is what I ended up with and overall I am pretty pleased with it. Some of the lamps are ones that were listed on this forum, others I chose based on researching this and other sites. One thing that disappoints me is the difference between the illumination of the clock and the other instruments. I'm not sure why the same lamp is not used in the clock or why the difference in the way it reflects onto the clock face, but although it does not look much different on these pictures, the clock is not as bright as the other gauges. Sorry, the pictures are a little blurry. Here are the lamps I used for the speedometer, hood tach, and gas gauge:

I also replaced the woodgrain dash trim for the heater controls so the light would shine through and I could read the display. The applique that I had before simply had the words printed on the face of the woodgrain, and it was not legible. This one is from Parts Place, advertised as the correct backlit trim. Whether or not it is the best one or not, I don't know, but its much better than the former. Here is the way I installed the dash lamps, not too painful, but a little work nonetheless. I removed the glovebox door and glovebox liner, this allowed access to the 2-3/8" nuts on the backside of the dashpad. Remove 2 philips screws from above the gauge clusters and carefully remove the dashpad. I dropped the steering column down onto the seat and removed all the screws to pull the dash forward. you will need to disconnect your transmission indicator lever and as you move the dash forward, most likely your speedometer cable. Some have indicated that you might be able to squeeze your hand up from underneath, I did not try that, there just seemed to be way too much stuff behind there. The gauge cluster lamps simply twist out from behind. I left the stock lamps in for the GEN, OIL, HOT, BRAKE, as I have other gauges for this. I changed out all the illuminating lamps, the high beam, and the turn signal indicators. If you are not sure which are which, shine a small flashlight through the hole you took the lamp out of. It took about 11-#194 lamps (including hood tach) and 7-#168 lamps for me to do it this way. They do not dim, I do not care about that.

 

If you look at the first one I link, it is a different model than the others. They claim to be 350lm vs 220lm for the ones you have. I bought them to be able to test which is better/brighter but I haven't tested them yet. They are supposed to be very bright. I may try it this weekend since my deck is about done.
