hancock airbase has been closed down in the 80s.. they are working with drones now.. boys from Syracuse air guard is still there i think.. something is still guarded at the Molloy rd gate.
Yes, I worked in the big, four story concrete SAGE building watching computerized radar scopes. The Boys from Syracuse were flying the A-37 attack aircraft and over the years they've evolved to the Predator drone. SAGE went away in 1983 and the mission was transferred to Griffiss AFB up in Rome, NY. Those were the days... young, dumb and bullet proof... Enjoy cruising the Finger Lakes with your Buick!
The 174th is alive and well, although their mission and scope of operations has changed dramatically when they transitioned to drones. I think they've done away with the chase planes in the drone testing. Early on, we would hear the drones and see the chase plane. Now it's just drones. Griffiss in Rome has been closed for decades. That area took a real big economic hit they they still haven't recovered from. Fort Drum up in Watertown is still going strong and hopefully will continue to do so.
