Doesn't look like a build sheet to me...it looks like some kind of Fisher Body work order. Why would someone remove these tags? I think I would have a vehicle database checked before I handed over a check. Also, why insist on a package deal for both? Wierd stuff

It wouldn't matter much, it's an X and that's all that matters. It's the Superbird of the Buick world.

People in the old days, around the 80s, would remove VIN tags when cars were in storage to dissuade thieves from stealing them. I remember that being a thing around Detroit

Dano number matching in my humble opinion, is more desirable, a lot less made, but a correctly done Stage 1 with all the correct parts is close.

Thats about the 2nd dumbest thing I have ever heard……..We hicks in Missouri even knew better than to tamper with a VIN.

This looks to me like the guy bought them at a recovery / stolen police auction. Probably got them for a song. Started to gather parts and realized what he would be into the cars for and decided he would be better off selling as is and putting some money in his pocket and walking away.

I know right? Never made sense to me but that’s a story I was told… But the guy who told me was probably the guy stealing the cars!

LOL ! Just so you are not alone infront of the firing squad , I did hear that about a Mopar years ago.
Definitely not common but in a way that makes sense. I believe Graveyard Cars takes the tags off fairly often for their restos.

Seriously, what happens when you get your car back from media blasting and the blaster destroys the vin plate and says "oops, sorry"? Do you sue the guy for 100k because he just destroyed all the value of your gsx resto? Or do you remove the tag and reattach it with the correct rose head rivets?

And when the car is done, how exactly is anyone going to know?

False VINs is why there are literally several hundred more 1967 427/425 hp Vettes in the world than we’re actually made originally….Some guy back in the 90’s made a bunch of new VIN and trim tags and got creative, actually went to prison over it I believe.

Don’t buy anything that can be verified with paper trails.

The 1st and last car I had fully blasted the guy just used heavy (or multiple?) layers of duct tape on the V.I.N. ,Cowl tag, door lock and handle holes (windows were just rolled down, yes very “crunchy” sounding window mechs after that).
Just me but I never have and never plan on removing any V.I.N. tags on a car.
Probably never would be an issue if replaced with correct rivets and doesn’t leave tell tale factory paint line misadjustment or rivet shavings in dash harness if scoped from the underside.
Main reason though is if I am standing there with a drill contemplating doing such a thing and I think “Could this EVER cause problems for me down the line and have someone beating on our house door, I don’t do it.
Paranoid? Yes. Anyone (other than wife with load of groceries heh heh) ever come beating on our door? Nope
    Better safe than sorry.
