I run a 275/60 drag radial on a 8" wheel and a 205/75/15 on a 6" wheel, sits kind of low and looks a lil racy but no one has said anything. Its a pretty laid back group, not looking to exclude anyone over lil crap like some classes do.
I understand we can invert the stock air cleaner top. Can we also run a 4 inch element instead of the stock 3 incher?
But the rules say we have to run the stock base, right? I like to run this way with a 3 inch or 4 inch open element.

Rules say drop base open element is ok, stock lid may be inverted, and no aftermarket ram-air. Rules don’t address taller element. I thought open elements were not allowed but apparently I was wrong. So, what do the BSA racers say? Should we continue to allow open element units and allow taller elements? Jim? Starc? Patrick
I have no problems with drop base and 4” elements myself. My opinion but will go with what the majority says.
I am ok with the stock air cleaner base and a lid is shown in Ray's photo. Looks more stock than a 360 open air cleaner.
I asked and was given the ok to run a drop base with an open element filter on my 1966 Skylark this past years Nats due to hood clearance issues that the 66's have with the 455 in them. It must've been in the other thread that was in this section last year.
I always ran a stock air cleaner, with the "diesel" 4" filter, and a longer stud, stock lid, right-side up. No hood clearance issues (except a bit more damage when I broke a motor mount... That pesky Buick torque...)
I agree with the stock base to at least appear stock. I feel like open element kinda kills the feel of this class. But I will certainly go with whatever the rules say.
Quick update on the class and plans for 2022. It looks like, so far, one clarification will be made to the ‘underhood stock appearing’ category, and that will be requiring a stock type air cleaner assembly, appearing correct for either for the car or the engine. This essentially eliminates the 360 degree open element type. In the interest of airflow, racers are allowed to race (but not display) with a taller filter (by 1/2”) and flip the lid. This puts the cars closer to FAST rules and reinforces the ‘stock’ in BSA. The second change has several goals. Organization for everyone, promoting the class and the cars in it, and peer tech. On Friday during the regular car show, BSA will have its own display area. All BSA cars need to be displayed there. If you are entered in another show class, that’s fine; but you’ll have to bring your car to the display area after it’s judged (probably by 11:00). This will allow all the racers to meet and greet and peer tech the cars. We will have a drivers’ meeting to get names, contact info, pit locations etc. and explain the tree, qualifying and any other race stuff. This will allow us to get a car count, too. We will also peer judge cars by anonymous ballot for ‘best’ and ‘runner up’ for plaques. (Note: you don’t have to buy a show sticker for this display. If all you want to do is display at the BSA class meeting, just bring your car over.) This meeting will be required for all who run the class. If you have a situation that needs special accomodation, we’ll need to know before that Friday. Let Jim Rodgers, Starc Traxler or me know. Also-any questions, thoughts or ideas-please tell us. If someone has a drop base factory type air cleaner that will fit under the hood of a 66 Skylark with a 455, I'll run it. If you want me to put a stock 455 air cleaner on for the show, and let me run my open element or even no air cleaner down the track, I'd do it. If I would've known I would be able to run this class one year only(last year), I wouldn't have painted my intake. Really didn't want to. Painting it in the car was a PITA, but cleaning it will be impossible to do in the car. Really hate to bitch about this. But I could probably go look at most everyone's car and find something not "Buick stock appearing." In trying to make a class that is inclusive for more people, it seems like it is moving to be more exclusive like FAST is. BSA was exclusive enough by not allowing headers and only allowing stock exhaust manifolds. Granted, I'm the only one that the "no open element" rule is going to affect, because everyone else can actually fit a stock air cleaner on their car, if they had to. But most of us with 66-67s with swapped in 455s can't. It physically won't work. Those that can, I'd sure like to know how. I've tried everything that they've said they've done. The only thing I can think of that might be the issue, is they may be using the unobtainium 67 GS400 factory frame and motor mounts. I'm using the TA repro frame mounts and stock 455 motor mounts. Maybe I'll put a 3" body lift on the car, stock air cleaner should fit then. So, those of you with the "stock appearing" rollbars, adjustable rear upper control arms, 10" tires and 3 inch exhaust, have fun racing BSA. I know I did. Looks like I'm going back to the all inclusive bracket class. Some one want to R&R my intake to clean the paint off it now?
We’ll work with you! This class is run by the racers (that’s why Starc reached out to you specifically about this. That’s why this past year, most answers to questions were not ‘YES’ or ‘NO’ but rather ‘in the spirit of the class’). Questions like yours are also why we want to have a display and drivers’ meeting. We want all the racers to meet, and if anyone has a special case like yours we’d like everyone to know why your car is allowed an exception and no one will feel that someone got special treatment. I really like the idea of showing our cars together so others can see how stock they really look and or are. It’s a shame all the work going into keeping it stock looking and many folks never even see the engine bay.
I’d go along with a stock unit for show and open element for racing. Depends what the majority thinks. Patrick
