Hi . I wonder how i can be 100% sure that my Riviera is a GS. It has all the emblems and such but they can be put in later, so how can I be sure ?
I'm no expert but what year? I believe other than circumstantial evidence, documents are the only way to definitively prove it and certain years would be available from Wayne Roberts or Sloan. Maybe in '65-6 the engine codes were exclusive to GS but not sure on that.
It's a 66. And the former owner said the following when I asked if it was a true GS; "evidence is throughout the car with the GS details and was confirmed via protect-o-plate badge 10 years ago." . Curious about that protect-o-plate badge, is that a physical badge somewhere ?
@JZRIV is our resident '66 Riv. GS guru although others are certainly very knowledgeable. When I bought my old '66 the car was only 20 y/o & orig. paint/drivetrain/interior so there was no doubt about it being GS - It may be possible to verify w/the POP assuming you have it.
The "protect a plate" came with the car and was used to obtain warranty/service work on the car. I have no idea if your car is traceable with the POP. But someone on here does and they will chime in. This is the best place in the world to ask a Buick question.
If the protect-o-plate shows options A8 or A9 it cam with the GS option. Those are the order codes for the Gran Sport Performance Package.
No owners manual or any paper like it came whit the car can't ask the old owner as i already bothered him enough .
Interesting /strange that he said it was confirmed with the POP but that you didn't get it w/the car.
On the second gen Riv if you pull the L kick panel you will find a small metal pocket welded into the body. Inside that there should be a folded piece of paper which is the Fisher Body build sheet. will have every option the car was ordered with and the exact date it was built. Its pretty well hidden so mostly over looked. .
Does the tire air pressure tag in the glove box show as a GS like the 66 Wildcat GS does? I can't remember.

Have had every nut and bolt off my 68 and other than looking above the headliner have not seen a build sheet anywhere in the car. My car was a 60K mile basically untouched rust free car when I started so doubt someone found it before me.
There was a build sheet in my '68 Wildcat when I bought it in '77. Forgot where I found it. ALSO forgotten where it's located today unfortunately. Tom T.
