I graduated in '85 but still a lot of these cars around and still pretty inexpensive. We had a quite large group of guys from several different schools on the north side of Baltimore that were into Buicks, some of whom are still into these cars and are board members. We all sorta met just by seeing each other on the road or through mutual friends. If anything, Buick was almost a mainstream if not close to dominant muscle car in the area.

I'll tell you about the first time I ever saw a GSX.

On Sunday me and my Dad would wash our cars, then drive them to the local Sunoco gas station and fill them up. Anyway we washed the first one and I drove it to the gas station. When I pulled up there was a White 70 GSX getting gas at a nearby pump. I said hi and kept checking out the car. I had no idea what it was but i liked it, then we both left.

Next I wash my car and go to the gas station. While there a 70 Yellow GSX pulls up to the pumps, and the same guy gets out of the car. At this point I started talking to him and asked if he didn't just bring a white one here. He said yes, the White one was his wife's car, but this one was his.

I never saw either car again, but it sure was crazy.

The guy I bought my old GSX from had "his & her's GSXs back in the '70's. His (yellow) was bought brand new & was the first one I ever saw. They bought the white one for her a few years later & he told me they had a hard time finding one & it came out of the Boston area. They only had one driveway spot & it was ultimately rear ended by a drunk driver while parked on the street & totaled but somewhere the hood survives. Mark Reeves wound up with it.

    Dan,
I always thought they were visiting because I never saw the cars again. It could have been the cars you are talking about.
    Too funny.

I follow a couple '70 Chevelle pages on Facebook and am absolutely amazed at how many LS5 & LS6 cars are "still around" - all with seemingly low miles and practically unmolested.

    (rolls eyes)....

Someone needs to post the pictures of the Stage 2 GSX here. I cannot find the electronic copies I had of that car.

I'll contribute what I can to this thread. I have a copy of the original GSX proposal thst engineering presented to the powers that be at Buick

I also have ot of interdepartmental memos on the development of the program. They originally proposed 1200 cars. Layer they estimated 850. You can see who was responsible for what.

Interestingly, they wanted a Hurst his and hers shifter for the automatics

Then there was the whole rear spoiler issues Buixk was dealing with. Weekly meetings back and forth with Demmer and Fisher #1 addressing paint adhesion, who's paying for primer, how to repair them etc...

Funny, they had already shipped out a few cars with defective spoilers. They say in the memo thst they're got going to go after those cars but if the customer complains, they'll warranty them. Lol

Really gives you a window into what was going on behind the scenes. What a pain in the ass getting these cars to market!

Interestingly (to me anyway:)), the body side moldings supposedly weren't available on '71-2 GSXs either despite the way options became a-la-carte.

I've often wondered if someone had wanted to SCO a vinly top or different color on a '70 whether Buick would've accepted the order. Personally, I really like the black vinly top '71-2 GSXs and on a yellow (or white) '70 would've looked great IMHO.

I don’t believe Buick would have done that in 70.

I do know there was supposedly a 70 Silver GSX, but it was not a Factory built car. Again supposedly this car was built at the dealership level to fill a customers desires. When this was brought up to me in a phone conversation I asked the guy for documentation, and never heard from him again, so I never believed it.

However, there was a 71 dealer installed GSX built, and the owner has plenty of documentation. That car even came to our GSX reunion.

    Dano,
To add a little more info about ordering a 70 GSX,

    Originally,
They had a specific Wholesale Car Order form for the 70 GSX’s. It listed all the available options, colors, etc that were available, but it did not have an order number. (One thing to note here, these original GSX forms did not even have the exterior color names figured out yet. They called the exterior colors Glacier White and Yellow.)

The dealerships had to attach the above form to a “1970 Buick GS and GS 455 Wholesale Car Order” form, with an order number, to get the cars built.

    Later,
they developed a different “1970 Buick GSX Wholesale Car Order” form. These sheets had an ordering number at the top, so you no longer had to attach them to the GS and GS 455 order forms.

Either way there were only 2 colors available on the forms, with no provision to order a vinyl top.

    Yeah,
both versions are out there, and we always wondered about the difference in the exterior color names.

It wasn’t until Mark Macoubrie corresponded with a Buick Dealer, from back in the day, that we learned the significance between the two forms and how the cars were ordered as time went on.
    Duane

    PS,
In the first form Jason posted you can see there is no ordering number at the top, but the later one has one.
