I'm wondering if anyone on this board has clear coated there old original factory paint? I'm thinking about doing this rather than repaint the car. If so what prep did you do? Did you spray the clear coat, brush it on, wipe it on or what? Any and all information is appreciated. Keith
I did some testing on a motorcycle tank that had faded single stage. Prepped it with spray prep and used 2K clear spray and it turned out nice.
It's a 63 skylark with the original factory paint (diplomat blue). I was thinking of cleaning it up good and clear coat it. What's your thoughts about this? Keith
My 2 cents: Really really clean - prep-sol - very very light sanding to break the surface. I did the same thing on my hippie van years ago - of course it was clear Imron paint - that stuff would stick to anything!
With a dark metallic lacquer I would use scuff stuff paste,..on a Grey scotch Brite pad,..then wash really well with Ajax or similar,..lite coat of Bulldog rite b4 the clear
What he said! "Bulldog® Adhesion Promoter is designed to promote paint adhesion to all automotive surfaces, even problem plastics. " from Kleanstrip "Scuff Stuff® is a high-performance scuffing agent that enhances paint adhesion by ensuring cleanliness and consistent surface profiling" from Presta Products
Thanks guys I appreciate all the information. I'll keep it in mind as I move forward with my car. The car is currently completely dismantled so it would be easy to clean up and coat. I just finished sandblasting the entire underneath of the car as well as the entire trunk compartment and most of the interior including the underside of the roof. Wow what a job that was! Now I'm going to coat it all with por15 and it should look great. Keith
