While it’s apart and I’m waiting for my heads, I decided to check a couple rod bearings, #2 and #8, they looked great. Found my instructions from Molnar, for 3/8 1.6” rod bolts its torque to 25 ft lb then 55 degrees. I guess 7000 rpm don’t bother them, I was using 15/50 oil, so that’s what I’ll continue to use, I DID switch back to the stock oil pump gears tho as I don’t see the need for high volume as long as the pressure is were where it should be it’s fine.
Mark, abt how many miles on those rod bearings? Was crank fresh grind, just polished or nothing new except new bearings since last build? Motors out, might as well have Michaels flow test an int & exh port, just for referance....
About 3000 hard miles. Crank was turned 10/10 I believe I got that crank from TA YEEEEEEAARS ago, Micheals polished it, bearing have minor scratches from dirt, probably from assembly, wear on upper bearing shell ( shiny spots) im not concerned about, no copper showing that’s a good thing Did you notice the thread on one of the two rod bolts? I had to chamfer for cam clearance.
Was your block checked to see if the line bore was still on spot after the main studs where put in? How does your thrust bearing face look?
I’m not tearing it down that far, never had issues with the mains/thrust bearing. I just wanted to take a peak at a couple rod bearings, I was somewhat hesitant to do even that, “if it’s not broke, don’t fix it” is what I’m thinking I was just curious to see the condition of a couple rod bearings after a few thousand miles of hard use, AND having the hi volume pump gears. Cam and cam bearings looked great, distributor drive and driven gears looked perfect.
