hey Gents- I am currently running 15inch rallys on my 72 skylark but would like a larger diameter and width wheel/tire combo as I am doing a pro touring build with an LSA. Can someone help me out with wheel specs that work for an 17-19 inch wheel. Looking for max width without any modifications.
It doesn't matter what the rim size is, 14" or 19", the back spacing requirements are the same depending on wheel width. For a 70-72 Skylark/GS, an 8" wide rim will want 4 1/2 - 5" of back space. A 10" wide rim will want 5 1/2- 5 5/8" of back spacing. It is very common to have less room on one side than the other because the body is not exactly square on the frame.
thanks larry! I was wondering if i could get a 10 inch wheel in the back and sounds like it is possible
It is, but like I said, it is NOT uncommon for there to be more room on one side than the other, so you'll want to measure as accurately as you can. The wider you go on the rim, the more of an issue it can potentially be.
On my 70 hardtop I’m running 18x9s on the front with 275/35/18s and 18x11s with 315/35/18 on the rears. Not sure on backspacing and the car is currently in storage. No mods to the front just removed the top inner fender bolt. On the rear I had to trim the wheel lip and wheel well moulding a little. I also had to bash the inner wheel well in.
Hi Joe, I have a 72 convert and put a 18x10 rear, offset 5.85 and 18x8 front. American racing groove wheels. No problem even with 3 inch tailpipes
Has anyone has any luck trying to correct the body to frame misalignment? I'm running into this issue right now where my passenger side rubs and the driver side fits fine. I'm wondering if I loosen all of the body mount bolts (mounts we're recently replaced and I used anti-sieze on the threads), and tried to use the alignment holes I've heard of, or just give the quarter panel a shove until it's better?
I'd try lining it up with the holes 1st. Here's the alignment pins I use. The longer version allows for a handle & has a better chamfer. The hole in the body needs to be clean. I can post a sketch/dims if needed.
Much appreciated, and yes dimensions for those would be awesome. I don't have a lathe but hopefully I can grind down some huge bolts or something.
I can post. You really want them done on a lathe. I'd look into getting a run of them made if there was enough interest.
