70 4 speed GSX's have fetched $115,000 to $173,000 at Mecum over the last five years but none sold since 2022. About time for another one to pop up.
Right, high bid was $72,000 on the block. Mecum’s website originally had it listed as “the bid goes on” at 72k and now says sold at $93,500 but that includes fees. So possibly the high bidder and seller reached an agreement off the block.
So $93,500 means the sell price was $85k. Not bad for a small block ‘71 that isn’t numbers matching, isn’t fully documented, and isn’t concours correctly restored. The seller has to be happy. I hope the buyer is too.
If a non Stage 69 GS 400 automatic hammered at $58.3k, there had to be some gin and tonic in play. Just being realistic.
I looked this one over closely and the restoration was superb even with the missing wheel well moldings and the wrong color lower body moldings. But, you're right about the lack of documentation except for the seller's contention that the VIN falls within some sequence of the group of 124 GSXs. (or, something to that effect). Has this car been determined on the forum that it was built as a 350 X?
I'm not doubting that the restoration work was done in a professional manner but just looking at the auction photos it's easy to nit-pick things that were not restored to original specs from a concours perspective. It was probably restored by someone not entirely familiar with '70-'72 Buicks or someone that just wasn't trying to make it exactly correct. Most of the items would be relatively straightforward things to change if someone was interested. It's still a very attractive car, just not a concours car.
IF it is the same car that was there last year, and I think it is based on a few things that I remember about it. It has a 350 frame under it. Not saying it is the original frame but something is not right with the combo.
I did and photographed it but can’t find the photo now. I do recall that the VIN was 43437 and the color and interior codes were right. However, I’ve been told it should have an SCOon the tag. This tag didn’t have an SCO.
