No Problem, as long as the total timing is being limited, it won't ping. All I was trying to get Robbie to do is check the total timing. I'd still like to know what his total timing is now. Bottom line is problem solved.
Larry, I have installed the lightest silver springs from an MSD kit. Distributor is set at almost 2 degrees before TDC with vacuum disconnected and plugged. I can feel that it's more early in (total advance) when i part throttle. When i hit the kick-down switch it accelerates very hard and it will shift just after 80 miles to the 3rd gear and from there it keeps going with no ping at all. I am satisfied now. My sparkplug wires and coil are really really old the wires have the orange boots and white numbered labels. Coil is old Delco Remy style....probably all from 1969. The conversion kit did not gain extra power or better start-up with my old 68 Riviera, i had pertronix ignitor/wires/hot coil.....it worked just as well as stock points/wires/coil...no better! When i need new points i will get Mallory performance points and condensor and that will work just fine for me. Thanks Robbie

Robbie called me today and we talked for awhile, Great guy. I went through every thing with him, its all good. By the way the factory used rubber all so so don't be scared to use it in a pinch......Chris

top speed should be (with 3.07's and 28" tires) around 150 @ 5500 RPM :Brow: with 26" tires and the same ratio and rpm 138. gets lower if your converter is loose or slipping. :TU:
Thanks! That's a very high speed for these heavy cars. Is it bad/dangerous for the engine to drive it for 15 minutes or more on top speed or at least between 120-150mph? Thanks :TU:
well, im sure its not good, but if the engine is in good condition i cant see anything super bad happening (as long as it stays together), maybe get a little hot but at that speed theres plenty of air flow. At 125 (3.07's and 28" tires again) rpm would be (if it had 0 slippage) 4961. With slippage, probably turning 5400+ rpm. I wouldnt do it for 15 minutes, unless you trust it and your tires are rated for it. Mine were s rated (112) or t-rated (118), so i was only there for a few (45) seconds, didnt want to push the tires.
Ha !! I bet you run out of fuel or your diaper is full before 15 min at top speed !!! I think I remember Dennis Manner (Father of Buick Motor designs) saying that as long as you have adequate oil pressure (10 psi/1000 rpm) the motor will live all day @ 5,000 rpm - that doesn't mean you should do it though. Im sure he was talking about a freshly built mill and not a 38 year old motor. Also, Aerodynamics are going to chop quite a bit off of that "theoretical" top speed not to mention the suspension needs to be up to it and as mentioned the tire rating. ....Im half crazy and I'd never attempt it UNLESS the car was gone over - and I mean EVERYTHING from nose to tail, top to bottom - and then only for a few minutes at best ... but If you are going to "Go for IT" at least mount a video camera under the passenger headrest and record it for us o No: :beer

Robbie, Steven is referring to the overall tire height. Yours would be 28.88" The 235/75/15 is a combination of metric and english measurements. The 235 is the section width in mm. The 75 is the aspect ratio. 75 means that the sidewall height is 75% of the section width. So to figure out the overall height of the tires, 235 X .75 =176.25mm for each sidewall. The 15" rim is 381mm. So 2 sidewall measurements + rim measurement =733.5mm, or 73.35cm. Convert to inches(2.54cm = 1 inch, or 25.4mm = 1 inch) is 28.88"
Measure straight across the middle of the tire and wheel to opposite edges of the tread. The diameter.
and a taller tire means less rpm per mph, which in turn means higher top speed :Brow: A taller tire can practically be the equivilant of a lower geared differential. I will be running (still havent made up my mind) 3.5 to 3.7. If i get a 3.50 and 28" on the street, then put 26" slicks on it for the track, the 2 in difference would be the equivilant of running about a 3.77 differential (which i think is what ill end up doing now looking at that calculation i made) took me a few minutes to make that work, first the 26" came out as a lower ratio, had me confused, then i just made a ratio of speed between the two tires, divided that ratio to make a % number, and multiplied that % by the original ratio :TU:

Hey Chris, I have floored it several times to at least a 110mph with a good warm engine and a day after i checked the oil level and it was just the same nothing burned away. With my other car some years ago i could easily burn a quart after i floored it several times. I will try and see where top speed is exactly on the Highway here or in Germany because there is no speed limit there for the Highway....did you know that? :TU:
