Just happened to be on Summit looking at something else with a customer, and this came up.. https://www.summitracing.com/parts/edl-2146?rrec=true $500 for a performer? Edelbrock, come here, and let me tell you what you can do with that manifold... I have seen this before, it's what a manufacturer does when they no longer want to make a product.. they just raise the price all to Hades, and then when they don't sell it's justification to drop the number.. That manifold has seen at least a $150 price increase in the last year or so. And 5 years ago, I could get one thru my local warehouse at jobber for less than $300.. Stock up on Irons! At 500 bucks, the cost/benefit deal is all upside down. $350 was pushing it.. And maybe someone will finally build the dual plane intake we really need.. A performer rpm style Air gap dual plane.. $500... for that ancient design... ya, kiss my ..... JW
It's also out of stock until 12/20. I looked at oldsmobile pricing just for kicks. Their manifolds are about the same money. The BBO RPM intake is 568 bucks! These were mostly out of stock until the end of the year aswell. I wonder if edelbrock is shifting their focus
I wonder if the move from California has anything to do with it? Could be logistics, could be it’s all part of a new business philosophy (like Jim and 436 suspect; the article below mentions a shift to ‘late model performance and hardcore racing’.) Could be material prices or supply issues. Patrick https://www.motortrend.com/news/edelbrock-moves-to-mississippi/
Moving from CA to MS makes it cheaper to do business... Edelbrock, when Vic was running it, prided themselves on having manifolds for every application. Apparently those in charge now are just going to focus on the high volume stuff, while charging confiscatory prices for any "oddballs" they decide to cast. When the major, or in this case only, supplier of a particular type of parts adopts this policy, what it does is open the door for a new player to make that type of part.. in this case a dual plane manifold.. Let's hope someone steps up to the challenge. JW
Try getting an Olds E-Brock Victor intake right now. They are currently being made of unobtanium. The whole world is one back order, and it doesn’t help when you rely on another country.
Their castings have looked like crap for some time on much of their product. I’ve purchased 3 in recent years. I saw a Weiand intake recently on a engine build and it looked fantastic. Would be nice to get a performer rpm type. Holley you listening? Can’t get heads either now. I’ve inquired. Even on cast iron heads. Got a funny reply or 2 or none at all. Buick’s have some issues. Not ready to throw towel in yet and go big Chevy, lol.
IIRC Vic Sr started Edelbrock by making flathead parts. I bet that today flathead parts are < 1% of their business. It's disappointing if they are going to drop the "oddball" stuff, but I can't hate them for responding to the market. I wonder how they did with the BBB heads..
And after all that we Canucks, Aussies, Euros and the like get bent further over the barrel and told we will like it or piss of mate!
The Chevy guys don’t have cam cores either. They are waiting too. Unless you want some vague grind sitting in a shelf, which is probably something nobody else wants either.
How bout sending a stock 70 455 intake to China and have them make a duplicate out of aluminum? Then we can easily port it and still have stock appearing.....
I like the idea of an aluminum version of the stock 70/71 intake... I am sure Bruce suggested it be done offshore to keep the price down. While I agree with the sentiment to make it here, that probably puts us back at the $500 a pop intake deal we are in now.. Then again, I guess I really have no idea what it would cost to have done here, casting is not my business. Would be nice to find out.. Such an intake, done correctly to be totally stock appearing, with all the correct numbers and details, in the $300-350 range, would be a hot seller. I can think of at least 4 or 5 engines in my shop right now that would be getting one.. JW
I suggested to TA Mike years ago and got a chuckle about alum stock intake.......just like I did when I suggested an aluminum Stage 1 head at a Q&A at the Nats....he said "why would I do that then folks won't buy my Stage 2 heads"....ended up being a big seller and may have saved the business. All in good fun.......
It's a brilliant idea. All the fittings would sit factory correct. The firing order would be evident. Makes total sense to me.
