Un-cracked versions are rare... I was thinking about taking off my sport wheel and putting the deluxe wheel back on just for a different look. I think the only difference between the 67 and 68 version was that the horn button on the 68 has more of a satin chrome trim, the 67 is brighter chrome... I could be wrong but I thought I read that somewhere. If someone knows otherwise please correct me.
I have never looked at part numbers or anything but I think you are right. All of my ‘67 stuff is bright chrome which matches the chrome metal dash in a ‘67. I looked at my ‘68 car and it’s got the original in it and it’s satin chrome. I bought a really nice horn button from a guy selling ‘68 parts and it’s satin chrome too. Maybe they switched to the satin chrome in ‘68 since the dash changed from bright chromed metal to the silver and chrome plastic dash? Just my guess.
I believe the satin chrome was due to the anti-glare safety changes and probably also to match the dash.
If I’m reading it right, the wheel had the same part number for both years-looks like 9749482. (Black). The horn pad is different (9745670 ‘67 Black, 9748212 ‘68 Black). Patrick
Yes, horn pad the same, but just with different metal surrounding it. When I bought the super nice part from the guy selling ‘68 parts I was disappointed when I got it because of the dull chrome. I had never noticed a satin one before and figured it was just a poorly made part. Then I got an all original ‘68 Buick and saw the same satin chrome on that car and figured it was a actually an intentional change by Buick. It’s fun learning new stuff about these old cars.
I believe the anti-glare laws in '68 also included the chrome finish on the back of the rear view mirror changing to a matte finish. Can't imagine much glare came off the horn button but there is a chance the sun could reflect off it?

Interesting Thread. I have been restoring steering wheels for a while now. In the last few years Buick GS ones, mostly out of necessity. I currently have two undergoing restoration. I knew of the paint difference between the years 67 gloss, 68 satin. But never realized the chrome trims ring also are different, until today. I feel kind of stupid. That being said I can confirm it and here is the visual evidence. The blue one on top came out of a 1968 Buick Skylark Custom and the steering wheel was blue. The next one down came out of a 1968 GS 400 hardtop parts car that had been T-boned. The next one down came out the skeletal remains of a 67 GS that had been left to the harsh NE weather for over40 years. I found it rotting away, there were few parts worth lugging out of the woods. The last one had never been on a car and was still tagged 1967 GS. Bought it out of a obsolete lot of parts. You can clearly see the difference in the chrome finish. Personally I have that 67 on my 1968 GS400 convert. On a nice sunny day with the top down I like the way she shines....
