What shifter would you use?

If you were thinking about changing from an original 4 speed shifter on a 70 stg1 car what shifter would you go with. I had a Chevelle back in the day with a Hurst Competition Plus and it was night and day better than the stock one.

The stock comp plus is the best there is unless you wanna butcher the floor pan up

The chevelles uses a Muncie shifter most often and yea they were garbage that's why the Hurst felt better,..use steel bushings and make sure the rods aren't worn,...TPP has the replacement rods if so

Like Ethan said, you already have a Competition plus in there.

You might want to consider getting it rebuilt. A Hurst master rebuild kit is about $100. A set of clips and isolators for the handle is about $50 and a selector pin carrier is $15. They're not that difficult to rebuild. I've done plenty of them for members

Thanks for the reply guys. If a Comp Plus will fit without mods to the car that is what I will go with. I enjoyed it when I had it in the Chevelle.
Does anyone have a nice one "rebuilt preferred"?

You have a comp plus in the car now,..unless it's been changed

The modern replacement comp plus isn't as good,..the guys at Hurst will agree,..way back when we were putting my pops car together the shifter was beyond sloppy,..called Hurst to see about a replacement guy said send it in they offered a restoration service then,...he then told me that the old ones were much better especially the rods

Yeah, the factory rods are way beefier

So the stock shifter in the 70 cars is a Comp Plus? Sorry for my ignorance about this but I have not driven the car yet. Just in the process of buying it and looking ahead.

Factory equipped! Worst case, you just need to rebuild it

I absolutely hated the competition plus shifter I put in mine .felt like a rubber noodle under power shifting, don't even bother with the pit pack bushings they sell get the tool steel ones with the big shoulder .5speeds.com sells them.
I recently bought a longs shifter with a conversion plate to fit a Muncie ( they are super T 10 based ) ...shorter throw ,stouter rods etc .not cheap tho ..

Way back in the mid 70s I upgraded to a rachet shifter. I'm not sure if that is the correct title. There was no H pattern and a separate lever for reverse. Starting in 1st gear pulling back into 2nd pushing forward into 3rd pulling back into 4th. There was a lever you pulled up on while moving the shifter forward to get back to 1st. The throw was very short I loved it and no more missed shifts.

That would be a Hurst V gate shifter. The only issue with alot of race style manual shufters is thst it requires you to chop up the hole in the floor.

Thats it what Jason said. I had already removed the console in my car installing the v gate was simple and I don't recall having to cut any metal to get it to fit
