had a leak i think out of the pinion seal, bought the national one number 2043 its what oriellys auto parts had,the seal that was in it have the flange around the outside of seal this one doesnt have it and doesnt go flush with the housing when put in.is this a big deal or no.everything is back together.

The seal should stand like .110" or so above flush when installed correctly.

is this for the 73? I have the same issues right now. A friend told me to get the seal number of the old one to make sure it be the same seal. He said they make many different ones for the same rear end.
Let us know if that fixed the leak.

If the seal is the same as 71-72 10 bolt rear than Rockauto has flanged seals available - 3 different ones for around $7 each. I think the flange seal is the way to go for this application.

Dave, that Napa part number is what the original one (#1242068 for a 1973 rear end) crossed over to be. I just installed it last night. Hope it stops my leak, soon to find out. I would have rather used a flanged one like the original one, but time is getting to close to departure for BG. Too many little things to still finish on the car. If you remember ask me in BG and I would know then if the leak continues or fixed.
    thanks for the info.

here is my follow up. Been about 10 days or more I changed mine and not a drop after installing the new Napa seal. So, that seal works great even though it has no flange! I used a small bead of Permatex Right Stuff on the perimeter.
