Heard about the 100s of wildfires in Canada, unbelievable the smoke travels this far into Ohio, heard New York is worse.
Yeah, It was really bad in the Philadelphia area yesterday, and they say it will be bad for a few more days at least. The smell of wood smoke is everywhere and if you are outside for any length of time you get a headache and your throat gets scratchy. My nose also feels itchy on the inside like I am about to sneeze. We had to close all the windows in the house, plus close the windows on the cars when you drive. Right now I am looking out my back window at a Bright Red Sun. The color looks just like a taillight when the light is on. That's how Red it is. You know what they say, "Red at night Sailor's delight, Red in Morning Sailor's warning." I guess we are getting a small taste of what the Dinosaurs experienced when they went Extinct. Talk about having a bad day! Duane
Its has made for a few unique sunsets here in Ohio for certain. We could smell the smokey smell yesterday morning with the stronger n winds
NY was really bad. It was orange outside. I was out in it till about 1ish....my chest started to hurt and I started coughing. I took a half day and just went home.
It's been hazy up here for weeks. Usually it just looks overcast and smells a like smoke in the air. It wasn't that bad yesterday.
Went to work in the morning, and remember looking out the window before I left and noticed I could look directly at the sun. It looked like a big red rubber ball. Didn't seem too bad in the morning, but by midday, you could see and smell that burning wood smell. Broke out the KN95 masks I still have and wore one for the rest of the day. Went to see Bruno for lunch and I stayed inside. Bruno was out and about tending to his garden. Did my afternoon shift at work, and drove home with the windows closed and A/C on. This morning is definitely better. I can't look directly at the sun, so I know it is better. Instead of the AQI being close to 500, it's 228 this morning according to the local news. It will probably get worse as the day goes on. No exercise until it gets better, maybe next week.
I feel for everyone suffering through the smoke. Still clear skies in central Canada. Here's a photo from my back yard taken July 5, 2015 when Fort Mac Murray, AB was burning.
We have fires all over Northern Alberta right now, but thankfully, the wind is blowing from the south east and keeping our skies clear here in Lethbridge. I remember about 10 years ago, I got out of the room I was working in, went to go outside and thought maybe the building was on fire. It was smoke from BC forest fires, 400 miles away.
I have the same health problems Duane is reporting - here in the Cincy area. Part of the problem is we haven't had much rain lately.
Horrible in northern NJ yesterday numbers 266-400. Kept going until about noon. Felt like I had the flu and hangover at the same time. Lied on couch all afternoon. Better today still have a headache.
It's even effecting Greenland and Iceland. And tomorrow they expect it to reach Norway. https://www.nytimes.com/2023/06/08/world/europe/canada-wildfires-smoke-norway.html
We have had terrible wildfires in northern California for the past several years but a couple of years ago we had that end of the world orange haze everywhere. It looked crazy mid afternoon, like a nuclear explosion had gone off. Hard to breathe, could not be outdoors for long periods, could not open windows at night. My daughter had some respiratory issues from it. I feel for all of the northern midwest and east coast folks going through this. It sucks.
Funny thing In my backyard I have what we here call a sump. If it rains very hard the sump will hold more then a million gallons of water.Anyway there's a fruit tree there the birds were having a feast with them. The fruit is red, when it ripens it turns black.Since this has appened they have not touched the fruit. Before you could not find a black one,now they are all there. Bruno.
It was 440 here in Ottawa yesterday, I worked from home as my office building shut off the fresh air vents on Tuesday which made it unbearable. The wind shifted today and some rain rolled in which cleared things off. Coincidentally, I was working in northern Nevada last year and got a full blast from the wildfires around Lake Tahoe in August/September, air quality was about the same.
Mark, I know you watch NoNonsenseKnowHow (NNKH) on YouTube. Did you watch his latest video? I had no idea how bad the air/smoke situation is, but Chris is showing it in his video of the Raven boat when they take it to the river. He lives in Yardley, PA Or: Click here to jump to the section where Chris explains about the video quality because of the fires in Canada
