That is probably NOT a good sign. Do you feel a pulse in your ankle, toes? If not, you should see the ER soon. It could be serious and something swelling to block circulation in your foot.

My son brought over a brace and I think it was a bit too tight....we tried to not have it tight but maybe my foot swelled. I took it off after my foot got cold and numb....
    Seems better now....
    Thanks for advice/concern......

    Here's a story to consider:

About 30 years ago a then good friend of mine lost his balance while stepping onto a sheet of curling ice. There was a loud pop as he fell down. I was right behind him when it happened. He wanted to rest for a minute, and play the scheduled game. I insisted...nay...DEMANDED that I immediately take him to the closest hospital. Drove right up to the emergency entrance where several people rushed out to tell me to move. Told them why we were there, and they quickly shifted to admitting him. Oh yeah, his ankle looked like yours.

Result - Compound ankle fracture, in a cast for weeks, off work 4+ months, and rehab. He thanked me a few days later. Saw him several months ago and you couldn't tell he ever broke it.

Bottom line, don't try to be a fuddling, self diagnosing hero and get it checked by real doctors asafp.

Kinda funny -- Knucklebusted giving advice to Anklebusted.:D

(Note: not denigrating his opinion or saying he isn't right -- I have no real knowledge on the matter.)

It's a pain in the butt to go to the ER and wait for ever these days but BQUICK just the popping sound you heard or felt is enough to maby worry and go and getting a true diagnosis..

I was shooting hoops in a friends driveway over 30 years ago "which I stink at" that had a long incline that made me turn my ankle. It was so swollen and so blue that a friend almost threw up.. I swore and still think I tore a ligament to this day.
Doctor said nothing broken but was on crutches for 2 weeks.. driving with my left foot was a pain cause it was my right ankle that got sprained. I don't think in the early 80's they could see muscle or ligament damage and I still feel a little uncomfort to this day.

Like every member mentioned, go to the hospital.

Go to an Urgent Care Center until you can see a doctor.
Did that last September when I had an attached tick!
    Be well!!

Ok...going in....I guess they will do an x-ray but MRI would show more of what's going on I would think....

    Conclusion:
There is a nondisplaced cortical avulsion fracture of the inferior tip of the lateral malleolus, measuring approximately 8 x 5 mm. The fracture appears closed. Initial encounter. There is diffuse soft tissue swelling of the ankle. There is subtle subchondral lucency of the medial talar dome, which could reflect an osteochondral lesion.

    That's what I thought!

No, not really - but at least you know what happened!

Google: "fragment of bone is pulled away at the ligament or tendin attachment"

    ouch!

I had something similar happen to me years ago. Dr. put me in a cast, later a boot. That’s the way to go. Don’t try to be a hero, get it done right now and you’ll have fewer problems later. Get someone to run your errands, forget about travelling for a while, just rest and let it heal. Btw, you never said, how’s the deer?

Not sure I couldn't pull over right away....was wondering if it was on my trailer....a couple people flashed lights so I started wondering....but it was just end of strap dragging.
