  3. why ? he's already got an 8.5 rear with 3.42 gears. bolt in axles, great parts availability and he will sell the 12 bolt and have the extra cash.

My bank account is exhausted from building a Stage 2 TA 464. I'm trying to get some money together for a Sniper EFI kit. The 10 bolt is ready to rock. I will build the 12 bolt later on if it doesn't sell.

  5. For what you're doing that 8.5 ten bolt is just fine. No need to waste money building the 12 bolt. Frankly I prefer the Buick 8.5 over the 12 bolt.

I've heard a lot of people comment they prefer the 8.5 10 bolt over the 12 bolt Chevy after years of hearing the opposite. For a dumb person like me, what are the itemized reasons the average driver should chuck their 12 bolt and install an 8.5 10 bolt on their 400HP to 500HP car if they already have a 12 bolt rear that they want to upgrade to posi from open? I ask this because that is what I am about to do and want to keep my original 12 bolt and not have an extra rear end laying around taking up space.

You should keep the 12 bolt, and upgrade it to Posi. The 71-72 Buick and Olds 8.5's have bolt in axles which is a better form of axle retention. 12 bolts have C clips. They also require the hybrid u joint for the smaller u joint. Buicks use a bigger u joint. If you were replacing a 68-70 Buick 8.2, I would recommend the 8.5, but in your case, the 12 bolt is more than enough.

The Chevelle gods are learning that their high and mighty 12-bolt is NOT alone at the top. The 8.5” 10-bolt is one of the best rears ever made. Either one of those rears is a good choice for a build.

If your 12 bolt is ORIGINAL to your Buick, Olds and Pontiac...IT will have the larger mechanics 3R YOKE from the factory
You guys all try to knock stuff ...Just build the rear right it will hold. 8.5 CORP, 12 bolt Chevy, 8.5 Olds.... 9", Dana 60 ..... all good.
I say for the millionth time ' its how well it is built, not what is built...' Es-specially on the street.
Lets not go through 7.5 and 8.2 Chevy etc. The normal 8.5 and larger ring gear for street strip will likely be sufficient for the grind of FUN on the street and strip. :)

I think the bigger thing to worry about at the moment is NO PARTS for any rear, trans or engine...lol.
People need to get off their butts and get a freak-in job...I am getting tired of paying for the lazy ones!

YOU SHOULD not...Unless the housing is bent. or you are going for an original car thing.
Build it...Plenty of parts...And do not cheap out on used parts. BUY AXLES for sure. 40-50 year metallurgy just will not work with today's high powered torque motors.
If you do have c-clip and you are worried...JUST add disc brakes...That will be your c-clip elim. caliper holds the rotor brackets hold the caliper to the housing end. PLUS no leaky axles.

If you want that 12 gone I will take it...lol

I don't want it gone. It IS original to my car. That's the whole reason I posted. Engine puts out 430hp at the flywheel. I don't think I need to worry about bent axles, not on radials. It's just a driver. Not rich, so just doing a posi and gear upgrade. Anyway I'll gamble on 50 year old U.S. metallurgy over current Chinese metallurgy any day (I assume everything is made in China because 90% of the time it is).

Getting to parts shortage; I recently ordered the tubular rear upper control arms for a build/ yet surprised to find they were scheduled for over month wait. Are other rear end parts on back order?

Some of my Tru Trac units are back ordered. So far so good on everything else...so far.

    Everything....lol.
My order this month was 3 weeks ago and I am still getting the trickle of parts as they get them... :( Just terrible.
I have gone back to the Junk yards and doing used parts. Less headache at this time and less stress of the customer on my case to get it done when I can not get the parts.
