I need instructions on how to remove a console from a 72 GS so I can install new carpet. How does automatic shifter handle come off, and what holds console in as to clips, etc.?
Put the shifter in Neutral .Start with the plastic chrome clip (trim plate) that runs down the middle of the shifter handle. It clips in at the lower ends. Remove 2 springs. Remove the 2 screws on each side of the handle. Note 1 screw on each side goes into the inner slide, and trigger. Pull the handle straight off the shifter uprights. Carefully pry off the long emblem in the front of the console. That reveals 2 more screws that go into the floor board. Open the console door. At the rear are 2 more screws. You can now remove the console. When you do, the inner slides will tilt in. Use a piece of tape to hold them in position when you reinstall the console over the uprights.
