I would avoid the 2004r in such a heavy application. What is your rear end ratio? I am not familiar with the tunnel of a 64 riv, but I can say the case of a 2004r is about the same size as a th350 or a 400.
I have run a 125 shot of nitrous on mine that was enough to give the motor 500hp and 500 ft lbs so I would say it would hold up. You can make them hold up to a lot of power Vince Janis in Akron Ohio Is our specialist Been there for well over 40 years Does great work there.
I think the concensus is that it needs to be hardened by a specialist for any over weight or over power applications. Also, still a lot of reports of them breaking.
I got one out of a 82 Cadillac hearse in a junk yard which is a pretty heavy car. They are the same size as a 350, BUT, by the time you add an adaptor plate it may push it back enough to cause an interference problem with the tunnel. I know for sure it does on a 66 Skylark GS. The modification isn't that bad.
Just finished installing a 4L60E into a 63 Riviera. No modification to the tunnel is needed. Was able to use the original crossmember after modifying and moving it back 3” but if a remember correctly the 64/65 member is back already. You will have to use a Shiftworks shifter and fabricate a bracket for it if you are going to keep the console original. I used a TCI tcu with their remote TPS. The bell house can be gotten from Russ Martin and his website describes which transmission you need to source. Your car has double CV’s so driveshaft angle alignment is not an issue. It was not a cheap conversion. Russ also shows how to do a 200r4 conversion.call him and he will tell you the pros and cons on both. I’m happy with mine. Ray
I also went with a 4L60E in my Electra after trying to fit a 700R4 into it. I'm really happy with the 4L60E! It almost looks factory. Even the guy who did the inspection asked why such an old car had a harness going to the transmission! LOL
using a speed gems i believe is there name now on my with a 200-4r. found it used pretty cheap along with a monte ss trans. either trans in stock form is going to be weak behind a nailhead. any kind of spirited drive will break them. built up the 200 will hold alot more power. broke a 4l60e behind a 300 hp truck that weighs similar to the riviera.
4L60E built properly can handle a lot of HP/Torq. One of the top builders in my area directed me to this combo and Russ Martin also suggested. Even though my application is a cruiser it should last as long as I’m able to drive it, old guy here. The other thing to consider is how easy it is to find a good 200-r4 builder in your area.
Russ Martin is not doing the 2004R adapter plate anymore. I've been waiting since last March for one. I just spoke with him again today. He said that with all he has going on, plus the fact that his machinist said it would be atleast another month or two, he has decided to drop it. So, does anyone know of another way of installing a 2004R behind a Wildcat engine.
Yes, I could have bought that kit. Problem is, I just don't feel comfortable bolting multiple pieces together that spin at high rpm and are located by my feet. Thanks for your input.
