Insane Buick maybe in another decade

i remember reading a while back about someone doing a 5speed from a toyota supra. he found all the parts to make it hook up to the engine. i was just wondering if he or anyone else got it to work and how well it works?

    Thanks

    sbbuick My driving scares people!

If the Supras are FWD, then I'd say it's impossible.

Even If they are RWD, why not go with a GM borg Warner 5 speed? It'd be a lot easier!

i would like to go with a borg and warner, but money is an issue....

also all supra's are rwd....and someone on the tranny forum tried it a long time back but never said if he finished it....

he had all the adaptors and ready to go in, but the tranny you can get for around 200 bucks for one thats in good shape, also they can take a lot of horsepower as the turbo's have seen up to 900+at the rear wheel...and a lot of guys seem to be able to run them on the chevy's...

if you know where to get a cheap borg and warner then i'm all ears as well though!

    Thanks

how well does a used or just a stock t-5 work on a 455 (basically stock)?

i found a few that weren't too expensive, so it looks like a good option, and where could i find bell housings for this?

    Thanks

T-5s don't usually hold up that well in stock 5.0L Mustangs (seen more replaced than I care to count), which is why the Tremec is such a popular replacement.

Putting a used (or new) T-5 behind a 455 in a heavy car is asking for trouble.

    Hi Dan,
That was me scrounging up the parts to fit the Toyota R154 5-speed tranny behind a Buick 350. Haven't done much with it for some time. Been out of the country courtisy of Uncle Sam. I'm back now but don't get home much because of duty issues.
Anyway, I'm more convinced that ever that the R154 will hold up well to a 350. Much better than a T5. I don't know how it would do behind a 455 though... although there is a company in New Zealand that makes a bellhousing to match the R154 up with a Big Block Mopar!

    I'd say they're pretty brave!

Anyhow, most of the info I've found on how tough the box is comes from Australian tuners who swear by it. Found some sites with some comments:

This guy has a Non-turbo supra gearbox behind a built 389 Pontiac! I like!

This is just an installation article. Also a non-turbo gearbox. The turbo gearbox (R154) is MUCH better.

    http://www.moparmarket.com/tech/archive18.htm

Scroll to near the bottom of the page. A gent here runs a Chrysler 360 with a R154.

    And finally...

    http://www.rodshop.com.au/bellhousings.htm

Match one up to anything you want.

    Photo from left to right:

    Bell #1: Stock Toyota 3.0L Turbo L6 to R154.

Bell #2: Factory AX-15 to Jeep 4.0L six. This bellhousing shares it's engine side bolt pattern with all American Motors 290/304/343/360/401 V8's and can be used to bolt up an R154 to any of them. This particular bell uses an hydrualic throw out bearing. The 94-98 versions used a slave cylinder.

Bell #3: Factory AX-15 to Dodge 3.9L V6 in Dodge Dakota pickups. This bellhousing shares it's engine side bolt pattern with ALL Chrysler 273/318/340/360 V8 small blocks. The 3.9L V6 is a 318 V8 with two cylinders lopped off. The R154 can be bolted up to any of them with this bell.

Item #4: This is the adapter plate available from Novak Enterprises in Utah. This bolts an AX-15 to any GM 4-speed bellhousing. It can also be used to bolt up an R154 to any Chevrolet/Buick/Olds/Pontiac bell or any bell that works with a Muncie 4-speed. Cost is $295.

    And there you have it.

    thanks!

thanks mike, i talked to a friend with a t-5 in his stang and he said that even a stock 5.0 is a little much for them.

greg thanks for all the info, but i'm not even sure i can get all the parts together to convert my car now, so it might have to wait until i get another car that started out as a manual. but who knows! thanks again and keep me updated when you can.

Sure thing Dan. Oh, I got this message from the gent in Australia:

"FYI for anyone doing a Pontiac/Buick - Supra conversion..

I used this Gearbox in my Pontiac 400 - Supra conversion into a HQ Monaro Coupe, with the bellhousing from Marks 4wd Adapter in Melbourne.

Except I had alot of Pontiac flywheel problems, but all thats sorted now.

This gearbox looks like its handling about 400hp with absolutely no problems, except a slipping clutch!.. "
