    Howdy,

I know this has been done before but what are the chances that we could have someone send a set of NOS quarters, I think someone on here has a set, to whomever makes all the sheetmetal for the 68-72 cars and have them make a limited production run or add them to catalog because I'm not sure I've ever seen a larger demand for quarters thats not gone answered by atleast someone for even patchs! Anybody with good contacts or anything?

    Thanks,

I have a good fiberglass guy up here that swears he can do a mold. Not sure that'd be what everyone wants though

Staged67gspwr has a set for sale right now. Since the quarter creation process is a stamping steel, the metal bucks required to stamp the quarters may be prohibitivley expensive. However a wooden buck could be made for individual panel beating by an expirenced professional, but you could also take the measurements off of the side of a car with good original factory quarters. I do agree though, there should be someone out there creating at least a patch panel (jc whitney has a patch but as I understand they are unusable as anything more than a filler for small holes)

If my quarters do not sell which i think they wont i`d be more than happy to lend my NOS quarters for a mole to be made.

    Thanks

Since 67 seems to the missing year for quarters for all the GM A-bodies, are there major differences between the basic stampings across A-body line in 67, ie could we get the GTO, Chevelle, and Cutlass guys on board for a generic 67 quarter stamping that needs finishing to turn into each specific car?

    Thanks,

the only full factory style quarter I am aware of being reproduced is for the 1967 Chevelle. The GTO has no good reproduction for 1967 for anything but a patch panel (which is just ok, 67 owners usually have to use it and a shoddy 66 larger patch to fix bigger areas - in essence they have to patch the patch panel). Each car's quarter is so different that the only part of the quarter that would swap over between the cars is the sail panel. Anyone who has seen a chevelle parked next to a GTO and a buick know the cars are not even the same length (not even close), and that combined with the body lines makes it almost impossible to use one quarter on a different car and make it look convincing. Basically evey body panel that interchanges amoung the different A-bodies (with the exception of the roof and a full door sil - there is a patch for the sills) has been done already - the window filler panel, door sil patch, and all the floors. Supposedly GTO quarters are on their way (they have been over a year in the works now) and after that buick and olds quarters also (I have been told by several GM perf anf resto parts reps that the licensing has been purchased for quarters, and typically if you hold a license from GM to reproduce the part for GM you are required to actually reproduce the part). We'll see where all this takes us, but to be honest I don't see non chevy factory style quarters coming out any time soon for non chevy a-bodies. My question is, where are the original sheetmetal dies for these panels?

I have heard various stories about how the dies are usually melted down after the production run, and I doubt them because GM used to have a policy (who knows if they still have it) that they would produce and stock parts all the parts for their cars for 10 years, after which only the most popular parts would remain available. I have heard similar sotries about fords, but it turns out that the dies for early ford falcons are in brazil because ford still produces a car (or was producing until recently) based on the falcon only for south american markets, so sometimes these things turn up.

I wonder how useable those dies would be after all these years?

hey what about the dies that the JC Whitney quarters are stamped on? any way to capitalize on the fact that someone somewhere has a die thats atleast close or are those things so bad it wouldn't even be worth using as a template?

I thought about that but from what I understand the JC whitney dies aren't even close to shape and panel lines. Look around here there was a post with pictures a while back about somebody using them and they basically used them for the metal and used on to patch both sides. As I understand it they are flimsey too.

A car or NOS quarters can be used to make a wooden buck that a panel beater can use to shape metal to fit the car. The tin man does stuff like this on a one off basis. It is a lot of work.

Some of the guys here at the Air Force Materials Lab I work with came up with an idea to make multi section concrete dies for say the front and rear lower quarters and the upper and then you can patch what you need or assemble the sections or having someone offer assembled sections. The forms would only last about 250 before they would likely fracture but still 250 complete quarters could be made off of the inital dies.

    Sounds good to me

how do you shape the concrete so it is exact? How much will the cost?

Well the concrete is just the base material there is actually a kind of plaster that you put on the top and then you shave it like bondo down to the right size. It will take a fair bit of time to build the costs won't be nearly as bad as metal dies but you basically heat deform the panels over the edge with a hydralic or screw press after you heat up the metal instead of hammering them in a stamp press. I'd have to ask the guys that have used it to make aircraft fuselages on the cost per lb of this stuff. I'm selling my 67 but I'm still on board for this project.

My '67 California would be all about a pair of these. Having them would probably make me kick off its restoration. Their absence has me focused elsewhere.

There will never be call for half a million of them like there might be for Chevelle quarters. But its pretty clear there is a desire.

Now if I could just get a two-tone blue Skylark interior done as well...

I like many of you have been dumbfounded by the lack of reproduction body panels for the 66-67 skylark bodies. I found a guy in the New England area that does part fabrication. He began by specializing in Alfa Romeo parts, but has since expanded his product offering. He already has done 67 fender extensions and he is willing to do any part needed if it will expand his business.

My needs are currently replacement quarters for my convertible, both sides and gs scoops.

Please let me know how many of you out there would be interested in quarters or scoops.

Caveat, he needs a set of off the car quarters, rusty or not to use for templating. Mine are still on the car and when I offered to trailer it up and leave it there for him, he said it would just take up his space and get in the way. So we need some donor parts.

Let me know. We have been emailing back and forth and he is interested.
