Guys - putting my 70 Stage 1 back to stock - put ac on last week. It works great - yesterday it was 98 and very humid - drove the car 25 miles and the car stayed around 75 (estimate) inside. the issue is however, I cannot get the air to flow out of the vents, only the floor. I have vacuum to the switch or at least to the hose. It has been sometime since I tried the heater/vents. Where do I start? I have a 70 manual...looks like greek to me...............And, it was alot more fun putting the car in race mode than taking it back to stock - and much easier..........
    thx

Got it to work - the switch on ac side was bad (the vacuum side from the main switch) - for years I have moved 2 spare complete dashes that I had - I was able to salvage the switch and a vacuum hose - now it works great. what a bunch of flippin hoses and wires that thing is.

The vacuum system on AC cars can be a pain

No kidding. Why in the world didn't they just build the door system so that if you lose vacuum, the A/C works normally?

I was thinking that it might have been the vacuum switch, but wasn't sure enough to say anything, then the thread dropped out or something. I'd bet money that the loss of vacuum at the switch defaults to heater and/or defroster, because that is the survival mode. You can live without AC, but may not live without heat in a cold enough enough climate. In 1975 I was in Idaho and was astonished to see a car come into the shop with cardboard blocking the ENTIRE radiator. I wasn't used to that kind of cold. The thermostat had stuck open, and the people had had to drive back home in -60 degree weather. That car did not overheat with cardboard covering the entire radiator. I spent two winters in Idaho, and can tell you, that's why I'm living in So Cal.

I got quite a lesson in taking dashes apart - my hands look like they went through a meat grinder.........it worked out ok as I had to remove the radio and glove box to "fix" anyway. And, I felt like a monkey hanging upside down - amazing how things look so differently when in that position.

Default is defrost so you can at least see where you are going.
